1.5 hour layover in JFK enough?
I'm looking at SFO-JFK-FRA-PRG for June. The layover at JFK is an hour and a half. Is that enough time? Everything to Frankfurt is on one airline but I figure we would be moving from a domestic to an international flight at JFK. I've never been through JFK so I don't know what to expect there. Advice?

I recently missed my connecting flight to Europe via New York because of bad weather despite 2.5 hours between our scheduled landing and departure. I will always give myself at least 4 hours betweeen flights for international departures.

If you're flying DL or AA, you're fine. You don't need to go through security, ride train, or whatever. Just like a domestic-to-domestic connection.

Thanks but this is on United/Lufthansa. The SFO-JFK leg is United. I think it's Lufthansa metal from JFK-FRA. Will that make a difference?

Yes, it would. UA uses Terminal 7, while LH uses Terminal 1. It's quick to move between the two on the free AirTrain, but you need to reclear security.
1.5 hours should still be enough, as UA should have given you the boarding pass and you don't need to claim bags. But it won't be leisurely because of the security screening. |
I would check on your flight TO JFK and find out how often it lands late - and how late. June should be a fairly safe time of year for delays - but you never know.
Frankly - given what can happen getting through security - I would want at least 3 hours to play safe. |
Thanks for the advice nytraveler. I checked on flightstats.com and the flight has a 53% on time record. Delays range from 20 minutes to over 3 hours. Not very good. I think I'll wait for a better price on more dependable routing.
