? Stay 2 nights at Hohenschwangau/Fussen
We are travelling the romantic road by car and plan to be in Austria Innsbruck/Seefeld region for Christmas. We will base ourselves in Rothenburg 4 nights and hope to do some day trips out to surrounding towns. From Rothenburg we will stay in Hohenschwangau/ Fussen 2 nights before venturing on to Austria early on Christmas eve. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know if you've considered this, but Bavaria's an excellent place for train travel. Daytrips from Rothenburg and the trip from R'burg to Hohenschwangau and Füssen are covered by the "Bayern Ticket", 29 Euros for 2-5 people per day.
Car travel is far more costly. On top of your weekly rental fee, $8/gal fuel, parking fees, and insurance, you'll pay perhaps 15-20 Euros per day for winter tires, without which you can be fined according to German traffic laws.
The Bayern ticket is also good for all buses in Bavaria and all public transport within Munich, should you end up there.

Thanks for this - most of our holiday from 28th Nov will be by train before Rothenburg we will be in Berlin then Dresden,Wurzburg. We are also spending a little time in France(early Dec) - Paris,Annecy and Strausbourg. Just thought it may be nice to have a car for a small part of the journey - will be a total of 1 week out of the 5 1/2 weeks we are travelling. After Innsbruck it will be train onto Salzburg and then finally New Year in Vienna before our journey ends. This is a first European travel adventure for us(2 adults 2 teenagers) so happy to take on board any advice you may have to offer.

Hello,
We will be staying here, Schlossrestaurant Neuschwanstein, in June. I liked the look of the hotel online, but what works well for us is the private road access to the castle. This was a huge benefit for my mom. Enjoy the area, it's beautiful, especially in the winter. This will be the first time I have ever been in summer, and first time back in over 15 years.
Happy Travels!

It all looks such a beautiful area - it is hard to choose
These are a couple of other places I have looked at
http://www.alpenstuben.de/en/zimmer-preise
http://www.hotel-mueller.de/index.php?id=68
The first has a family apartment and the second a friend of mine stayed at last year and said it had beautiful views.
The benefit of staying in Fussen maybe a few more things to do /options for meals.
Thank you all for your time in replying
