WILL HAL CREW MAKEUP BE PROBLEM

Considering that HAL prides itself on its crew made up of Indonesians and Filipinos I was wondering if that will hurt their line. At the present time many, many Indonesians are supporting the radical bin Laden and no doubt many of the crew members on HAL are part of this radical Muslim subset. What steps do you think HAL is taking to screen their staff and get rid of any radicals? What would prevent one of the staff from committing some suicide act on the high seas? <BR> <BR>Anyone going on HAL should give this strong consideration. It would worry me for sure!

Ok Fodors..where are you? Please, please delete this post before all the yahoos read and respond. Thanks!

Me, too Oct 10th, 2001 10:17 AM

I think Wondering has a very good point. I would worry more about crew than fellow passengers.

I was wondering the same thing, actually. Still, as one who's sailed HA many, many times, I'd always been struck by how caring and cheerful their crew was. And I always got the impression they truly admired Americans. Definitely something interesting to watch.

You have got to be kidding??? Has this been posted by Hal's competitors trying to hurt business. What kind of narrow minded paranoia is this?? What makes you think that other cruiselines and airlines don't have these nationalities working for them. Needless, to say unless you actually walked up to someone and asked them about their homeland and religion you would'nt know for certain where anyone hails from. I for one am more frightened by the type of redneck mentality that posted this message!

Me, too Oct 10th, 2001 12:08 PM

No, in fact I happen to be a big HAL fan and also I am Filipino. The fact is that all cruise lines should be looking into the background of all their crew members, whether European, Asian, American or otherwise. <BR> <BR>For the record, HAL is of course not the only cruise line to employ Indonesians and people of other nationalities who come from countries who are presently showing anti-American sentiments. As a future passenger, I want the cruise lines to be as sure of the integrity of their crews as possible.

Jazzman..just sined back into this site and was hoping that Fodors would take my suggestion and delete this post! This is the type of prejudice and hatred that this country does not need!

Woah! I don't think Wondering was doing anything but voicing something triggered by the disturbing footage we see on the new every night. So blame the media, if you have to blame someone. If I saw thousands of, say, English Anti-American protestors in the streets of London, I'd think twice before booking the QE2. And, what I believe he or she is referring to, is the fact that HA's Indonesion and Filippino crew is definitely something the line promotes because they are so outstanding. I think he or she is referring to it as more of a PR issue/crisis based on the news. The only thing that rubs me the wrong way about the post is his/her "warning" at the end.

What makes you think that there are'nt English anti-american protests in the streets of London???

Fodor's Moderator where are You????? <BR>We don't need this crap on the board. <BR>Life right now is already too uncertain and unpleasant to be reading negative junk like this as well.

<BR>Message Boards are a place to write our opinions and this is now the place to write about our fears. <BR> <BR>What happened to the U.S.A. can not be forgotten in the very near future. Eventually time will heal but the time is not now. <BR> <BR>If it will help anyone to discuss their fears here, all well and good. <BR> <BR>Possibly I can help. <BR> <BR>Within hours of the disaster the cruise lines went into a Level III (highest) security alert. <BR> <BR>There are a multitude of measures that have gone into effect. Too numerous to write here. <BR> <BR>The Immigration Department is actively and effectively screening all passengers and crew. <BR> <BR>If you have cruised in the last few weeks, such as I, you would see this intense scrutiny. <BR> <BR>The following measure should answer "Wondering's" question: <BR> <BR>"Federal agencies will ensure that those passengers and crew suspected of being on the INS 'Prevent Departure' list are promptly reported to the federal authorities for further action." <BR> <BR>Don't lock yourself in your closet. Terrrorism is something that we will have to live with the same as all foreign countries have for quite some time. The positive note is ..... we have the agencies and the funds to counteract this threat while other couintries do not. <BR> <BR>Pray for world peace. <BR> <BR>Paul <BR> <BR>

Well Done Paul! Thank-You for putting things in perspective. North America has changed and we will all have to learn to live with this hanging over our heads for years to come. I for one will not hide away and let these Bastards achieve their goal of frightening everyone on an ongoing basis. I will however become more vigilant in watching my surroundings and fellow man for signs of suspicious <BR>activity. Evil and evil doers wil not succeed!
