Why so much complaining about cruising?
Why do people complain so much during and after cruising? Is it because they have unrealistic expectations or is it that they are just old and have nothing better to do? Just because your food was not absolutely perfect for one of your meals is not a good reason to bash an entire cruise line. Also, if you dont like a cruiseline, it is stupid to continue cruising on that particular line and then posting complaints about it. For whatever reason many people b*tch about Carnival. If you dont like that line, then use a different line.

It is a combination of both unrealistic expectations and boredom. Some people have no jobs and just sit on this forum all day and consider it to be their chatroom and just comment on every post (regardless of whether they have anything helpful to contribute). Until Fodors requires email addresses to be verified, this website will continue to be overrun with useless postings and complaints.

Cruises are vacations and should be enjoyed. Don't ruin someone else's cruise by your complaining about things while you are on the ship.
|
I agree 100% with the above thinking. Way too much complaining goes on on cruise ships and on this forum.
|
Cruising is too good of a deal to complain. if you went on a 7 day cruise your 7 dinners alone would be well worth $50 per person. That is $350 for each person. Plus you get the travel to far way lands, which would cost another few hundred. Even if the food is not perfect, they have to feed a few thousand people within a few hours. Not many 5 star restaurants can do that. Of course fancy restaurants will get it perfect. If you don't like it on the cruise, just return it. Don't let it ruin your cruise.

Also, don't complain about it while on the ship so that others have to hear your complaining.

This board is nothing compared to some reviews on cruisecritic, cruisemates, etc. When reading reviews by folks who cannot spell or have no sense of syntax, I become wary. They seem less intelligent, less intelligent and more apt to whine. When people generalize..."the food was lousy, the waiters were snooty, etc" I never listen too seriously. Specific comments, such as "my steak was undercooked", "waiter Mark never returned to fill our water glasses", our toilet overflowed" etc. impress me more. Your vacation is what you make it, for the most part- as is your marriage. Keep a good attitude, smile, traet folks well and don't expect perfection. Of course, all said, it takes one person trying really hard to screw things up to succeed.

Having ranted, my 2 huge mistakes were typos. Less intelligent, less traveled than many. Treat people well. Thanks.

Linda- You are brave to re-post! When we go on a cruise we listen to the complainers and wonder just what would make them happy. Takes all kinds...
|
There are some people in this world who lie awake at night knowing that someone out there someone is having fun. This bothers them tremendously and keeps them awake and in a fretful state. They have pitiful and miserable souls, what can I say. We have all had the opportunity to sit with such people at one time or another. Nothing will make them happy and most of us are smart enough to realize you don't want to even try. Such are the people on these boards who complain endlessly about cruising.
|
OH MY! finally a tread that speaks the truth. Olsen nailed it with his post.SOME people are never happy. Thus their goal is to make sure every one is as miserable as them.
|
Ever wonder why there are so many complainers. Do you think these people just decided to spend some money, some time, and take their time just for the fun of it?

Think people.

Cruise lines are not the value you make them out to be.
|
Not that there's anything wrong with it but......complaining about complainers?
Hmmmmm, hope I've spelled everything correctly. LOL :-)
|
James:

I believe some people complain just to hear themselves complain but others really have a legitimate concerns. Although I have never cruised before, I see the prices for cruises and it is not cheap so they should get good services for their money. When in Florida I have eaten for a lot cheaper than $50 per person and the places were not dumps. Just my $.02.

I have a cruise complaint but I never aired it until reading all of the holier than thou comments above. We were on Celebrity's Summitt in March and had two scheduled ports summarily cancelled and time at the other ports drastically reduced because the ship lost much of its propulsion and we were reduced to limping around the Carribean. We paid a lot for that cruise and we were denied what was advertised and what we paid dearly for. Otherwise, the ship was great, the food wonderful, and the service was outstanding. So as far as I am concerned, one can not say that cruise complaints are solely from those disaffected and those who should not cruise to begin with.
|
Ummm Lois. Wrong. I just like the quality of service that was presented in the sixties that is not available anymore. Have bright lights and an indoor skating rink dooes not always make it a better ship.
|
xx

You sound like my father.

Don't make them like they use to...huh?
|
Sounds like your Dad is a smart man.
|
How about the reason people complain is that the brochures don't sell cruises as crowded, cramped, poor selection of food and lots of extras you have to pay for that is super over priced like 75 cents a minute for internet.
|
I agree Monique. If some of you want specifics: soggy french fries, gelatin goo on top of desserts (god knows why), dried out hamburgers, and more. This all on the illustrious RCCL, Sovereign of the Seas.
|
Jim,
That is EXACTLY what people should say, thank you! This happened , that happened- be specific, name the ship, the date, the person and the complaint. When I get great service, I reward the individual. I wrote to RCCL once about a few people who made our Grandeur trip outstanding. Later, a few wrote back to me to say that they had received an award for that recognition. Isn't it worth a few minutes of your time to do that, folks? Complain when you are wronged, but balance it with praise for those overworked souls who try so hard for you!

I think that there are a lot of complaints for several reasons.
#1 Because cruises are booked so far in advance that some have unrealistic expectations about what they will find because they over plan each minute while on board.
#2 Because people also add their cruise price with their air fare price and feel like they are spending a large (huge) amount of money for this vacation and they want it to be perfect (nothing is absolutely perfect and they also need to realize that the air fare has nothing to do with the price of the cruise).
#3 Some are still watching re-runs of the Love Boat and still think that they should be recognized by ships officers and waiters and are miffed when they aren't (I cruised with one like that a while back)
#4 Some just like to complain, and nothing will make them happy no matter how great the cruise is.
#5 With so many cruise passengers out there, as with any large business, you are going to have different problems arise and those passengers affected will voice their complaints more so than the content ones.
IMHO
Toto
