What's the Mediterranean like in August?

Didn't get an answer to an earlier post, so I'll be specific. Looking at Windstar Athens to Venice in August and concerned that all of Europe will be on vacation. Has anyone got experience with that itinerary in August?
Thank you!

Hot and crowded just everywhere. All of Europe is on vacation in August. You'll have more Europeans on board, and it makes interesting, too.

We were in Venice in August on a Princess that held 3000 people so it would be crowded any way, but in August awful. In St Marks square there was no where to step, you either stepped on a person or a pigeon. The lines to get in any place were so long, we skipped some places. It was also hot.

Heed these warnings and change your travel time. Mid September to mid October will be much better weather and fewer tourists. If I were you I would never consider that itinerary in August.

Wow, that's fairly definitive. Thanks for all the advice.

I sailed on Celebrity leaving Rome Aug. 21st for 11 days. Stopped in Naples, Taormina (Sicily), Dubrovnik, Santorini, Rhodes, Katakolon, and Mykonos. I don't like the heat and was terribly worried about it being too hot -- but had no choice about the sail date because I was going with a group.

We spent four days in Rome prior to the cruise. Rome and Pompeii (excursion from Naples) were extremely hot (around 90 degrees although not terribly humid) -- but I loved them and had a FABULOUS time anyway. Everywhere else, the weather was gorgeous -- low to mid-eighties and sunny.

The only place we encountered exceptionally long lines and crowds was at the Vatican. But we circumvented the lines by joining a wonderful tour. My preference would be to go in May or September -- but I had an incredible time in August and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Best time for the MED is Mid Sept--gorgeous weather and NO crowds anywhere...

All of Europe is on vacation in Aug. and it is hot as blazes...

I concur. Pretty warm. Drink alot of H2O, wear a hat that breathes (i.e. not a baseball hat but say a straw Panama style hat) and light clothing. Also bring good shades and pace yourself.
