What to pack for alaska
 

We are from lLouisiana. We're going on a land and cruise tour to Alaska in September. I'm worried about being cold! But also worried about packing too much because of weight limits on luggage. Also what's the best brand of boots that will keep my feet warm and dry?

It's going to be cold, but not that cold. Any waterproofed hiking boots such as Timberland would be more than sufficient to keep your feet dry.

September weather is unpredictable as it is the shoulder season. I have seen temperature of 70+ but I have also seen snow. Snow is really rare in early September, but it could happen.

The ship itself is air conditioned, so you should be fine. Where it gets cool is when the ship is sailing towards the fjords and the combination of the cooler air and the "wind" from movement of the ship will makes it "cold".

Dress in layers, cover your neck and head, gloves if needed. Water proof jacket, hoodies would be good. Of course, you can always buy at the local shop or the ship's gift shop.

Bring binoculars, you will regret it if you didn't. Unless you wanted to go hiking, comfortable waterproof shoes will be fine.

You will see cloudy weather with light drizzle. You probably have 1/3 chance of light rain and 2/3 chance of cloudy sky.

A lightweightwool layer such as those made by Ice Breaker will kerp you warm and take little space in your luggage. REI or a hiking outdoir store will have them.

Agree. Dress in layers with an outer waterproof layer and go to an outdoor wear store like REI to get a better idea of the kind of boots that you need.

Bring a fleece vest to wear under a windproof jacket. Bring thin gloves and ear muffs under hood. This will allow you to be in the front of the boat enjoying the views. Everyone will be sitting on their balcony, so the side of the boat with the wind blocked will have chairs available. Why will you need boots? Sneakers with warm socks will be fine.
