What is an Obstructed view?

My wife and I just returned from our first cruise and are already planning the next. On this last trip, we had an inside to save dollars but she now wants an outside on the next. In several messages, I noticed references to obstructed view cabins. Can someone tell me exactly what this is? Thanks..

You may look out your cabin window to see lifeboats. ((b))

If your wife wants an outside cabin just to let some light in, she might be okay with an obstructed view cabin. But if she wants to see the ocean, maybe the obstructed view is not the answer.

As others have stated, something, generally a life boat or ship structure, blocking the view. Often these cabins are the same price as inside and are more prevelant on older ships.

The cruise line should be able to tell you the percentage of obstruction, 25%, 90%, etc...

Friends of mine had a obstructed view on their Mediterranean Cruise last October.

The window was blocked above 25%,as their window was right between two life boats and the obtruction was virtually nil..

When you are touring all day and it gets dark at 6 PM, just as your are going to dinner, it really does not matter.
Of course ,ask how much less it is from a non obstructed view.

Maybe your wife needs an outside cabin for other reasons ,like claustraphobia etc.

The obstruction can be more than just lifeboats. Even on new ships, some cabins will have a walkway outside your room and you could look out only to see a bit of sky and a wall, such as in forward facing cabins that have a steel wind breaking wall instead of a railing.

We have had these cabins and they ranged anywhere from almost no obstruction up to looking at the side of a lifeboat. If they are the same price as an inside, they can be a real bargain. Just know that they are listed this way as a warning and ask the line for the percentage of obstruction (like 25%, 50%, 90%, etc.)

We had few obstructed view cabins and let me tell you - no problem at all. When you pay $800 for Oceanview vs $500 inside cabin - obstructed ocean view for $600 seems a bargain! It is still an oceanview and you can see daylight and we all had view of the ocean.

Is this an obstracted view when you look out of the window, but all you can see is the black bar with the word "censored" on it?
