What do they do with old cruise ships?
 

The thread on ship size got me wondering - what do the cruise lines do with their old ships? Tear them apart for scrap? What else would you do with an old cruise ship?

It seems that a lot of them go to the "breakers" or scrap yards that tear them apart for the salvagable materials.<BR>I think a lot of this is done in India.<BR>Strangely, it always seems that a lot of them "break-up" and sink in a storm on the way to the breakers.Hmmmm

yes, they send them to Europe. Greece has some really crappy ships. Also, i have seen some crappy old ships down in mexico.

I know that there is a Canadian company who sells Suncruises which I guess the line is British owned. Most of thier ships are old Royal Caribbean ships. I have a few clients who love them. It is really really cheap, so for a first time cruiser on a major budget it wouldn't be too bad.

They send them down to Florida for four day cruises to the Bahamas!

Paul T. lives on an old cruise ship. He rides around all year spying on other cruise lines and then he posts answers to questions posted here. He has tried to get off a few times, but he is now a man without a country. He is trying to found a sovereign country for old travel agents, but if that does not work he will settle for free sodas on Carnival.

I have been on the Carnival Fantasy for over a year now. They have me play the accordian during the day and I sleep behind the bar in the Atrium and I am going blind with all the changing colors. I was in Freeport, Bahamas 10-2-02 via the Carnival Fantasy. Saw both of the Big Red Boats just sitting at the docks. Correct me Paul if I am wrong, but aren't these the original ships Disney leased when they started in the cruise business?<BR><BR>Also, if you go to Freeport.....when you come off the ship, look to your right out beyond the little verandas and such. All the way over to the docks about 200-300 yards away. There is a white ship, I would guess 75-100 feet long docked against the backside parallel to the direction of the cruise ship. When we docked in Freeport on the 2nd, about 2 hours later a ferry was backing in over at those docks and backed into this ship. From the side you could see, it had a major dent as well as a split. Just out of curiosity, some of us walked around the other side to get a closer look. The WHOLE RIGHT SIDE was split wide open about 4 feet above the waterline.....big enough for me to walk through. I later heard the ferry came into port without a harbor pilot. If it tis still there it is well worth your time to go look at it.

You'll notice that Paul still chose Carnival to be stranded on. This continues to convince me that the passenger profile on this line is unique and I will never entertain sailing with them.

Sorry....I must be dumb today. It was on the Sensation, not the Fantasy.

Hi Mark,<BR><BR>Premier Cruise Lines originally owned the Big Red Boat (Majestic). That was replaced by the 2 Big Red Boats, the Starship Oceanic and the Starship Atlantic.<BR><BR>They were under contract with Disney. This was back before 1997 when they lost the Disney contract (Disney built their own ships).<BR><BR>Premier picked up a contract to have Looney Tunes characters in 1997 and 1998. They lost that contract due to budgetary problems. <BR><BR>They continued sailing with non-descript charcters which did not fare well.<BR><BR>The line then purchased all the old Dolphin ships (big mistake) which some they painted red and named Big Red Boats .... who knows, got too confusing.<BR><BR>I have no idea which ships you saw in Freeport, but I can take a guess they were the Old Dolphin ships, Big Red Boat II and III. They were small ships, right? I would like to know myself.<BR><BR>Paul<BR><BR><BR>
