western Caribbean excursions?
 

We are doing the western carib aboard the Voyager of the Seas this summer. What are some fun excursions to do?

There are many choices to be made ont he ports yhou will be visiting. I am making the assumption you will be going to Grand Cayman -- do Sting Ray City. In Cozumel, you might try Chankanaab Park if it is your first time to Cozumel.

Book with private tour operators in advance. Don't take the ship's excursions- they are costly and jammed packed. I like Captain Marvin for Stingray City and Pete Taylor for Dunn's Falls in Jamaica. Ditto Chakaanaab, especially for snorkeling. 10 bucks to get in. Catch a cab at other side of dock- you'll find them. Set rates for cabs. Do the park early, come back and change and then go do the drunkfest at Carlos and Charlie's! A really crazy bar, not for the fainthearted but very funny.

I agree that making your own arrangements can be more fun for less money. I have done so myself with great success. However, please allow me to add one word of caution. A couple of years ago we were on a cruise that made a stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We were warned on the ship that traffic jams are common in Jamaica, and they will only wait for people on tours arranged by the ship. As soon as the last group arrives from the ship tours, they will sail. If you're out on your own and you don't get back in time for the sailing, they will not wait for you. The day we were there, a terrible accident occurred on a major highway causing a worse traffic jam than usual. Several people from the ship did not make it back in time and were left behind. This was our last stop, so these people had to fly home. Of course, they had nothing with them but the clothes on their back. I do NOT wish to discourage you from venturing out on your own, but please, in Jamaica especially, allow a generous amount of time to get back to the port.
