Weather for an Alaskan Cruise in May?

We are thinking about doing an Alaskan Cruise at the end of May (Memorial Day week). What can we expect as far as the weather goes? What kind of clothes should we take?

Alaska is really difficult to predict.

This past year, people in May were wearing shorts in the ports. We went at the end of June and it was really cold and rainy. I wore my light winter jacket for most of the week. I heard the week before mine and the week after were fine. There was no way I was going to put shorts on for our cruise.

From my research, May and June are traditionally cooler months, but drier months.

I would be prepared and bring both warm and cool clothing.

Many people wore jogging suits for the ports. It would be a plus if they were water proof. I would definitely bring something more then a light jacket just in case. I bet our ship sold jackets to 1/4 of the passengers on our ship.

Definitely bring rain gear. It poured for us in Juneau. We didn't let it stop us from going whale watching and to Mendenhall but it was pouring the entire time.

Despite our weather - I loved Alaska and am going 2 weeks after you this summer. Hopefully that will be the magic week.

HiDon, we went the last week in May and the weather was cool. Layers is the best. be sure to take gloves, hat scarfs. You will have all types of weather. Waterfalls are wonderful at that time of the year. Take one pair of short, just in case.

The best weather for an Alaska cruise are the last two weeks of July and first two weeks of August. The farther you get away from that, the likelier it is to be colder.

You cannot predict the best time to cruise Alaska. We had great weather in early September this year, whereas earlier in the summer it appeared to be cooler and rainier, with a few nice weeks in between. It is always hit or miss, so bring layers, prepare for at least some rain, and just go when it is most convenient for you to go.
