Tuxedo Rental?

First cruise. Going to Alaska with Celebrity. Am considering renting tuxes for the menfolk. Have any of you done it? Were you happy with the experience? Seems easier than lugging a lot of dress clothes. Any warnings? Thanks!

Really?? Nobody on this forum has anything to say about this topic? If you've ever rented a tux and it has gone well, I'd like to know that, too! Thanks

My friend rented a tux for a 10 or 12 day cruise (3 formal nights), and I remember it costs some astronomical fee of $175.00.

Go out and buy one -- gives you more excuses to go to Formal Affairs in the future. ((b))

I suppose it depends on these "menfolk." Are they likely to wear a tux in the next 5 years? if yes, are they likely to be the same size?

if yes, then just buy one.

Otherwise if money is not an issue, then go ahead and rent one. if money is an issue and if these menfolk already have a suit, then have them bring their suit instead.

My husband rented at my (not from the cruiseline) a tux 10 y ears ago for a cruise.. He enjoyed it so much that when a local shop had them on sale he bought one...Now, it maybe time to get another one..he's lost weight and I think the costs of having it taken in would outweigh buying a new one.. There is something about men in a tux whether it's a wedding or on a cruise or special even that is very special...

ParrotMom,

I agree. We're taking our first cruise in July & I've been arguing with my husband about bringing his tux. There is nothing nicer looking than a man in a tuxedo. It lends such an air of elegance.

Jomamma, bringing a tux is just like bringing a suit. And the cost of a rental is the cost of a tuxedo. Two formal nights (usually), 1 tuxedo, 2 shirts, good to go!

If you have a Value City by your house...buy your tux there. They are in the neighborhood of $40. My dad bought his there.

What a friend did in L.V. was go to a resale shop and bought her very tall husband a barely used tuxedo. Parrot Pop has used his tux for weddings and other special formal occasions.. Along the way he has been able to pick up at sales extra shirts, cumberbund sets and vest. Oh, I don't do too badly myself..lol

I'n not sure about Celebrity (they may be more formal than Radisson which I'm familiar with) but I'd definitely check to confirm that there are any formal nights on their Alaskan cruises...many lines are all casual in Alaska.

For other itineraries, my husband purchased a tuxedo with a couple of dress shirts and 3 different sets of cumberbuns and matching ties. He's worn them over and over with just changing the cumberbuns/ties for an entirely different look.

PURCHASE don't rent! It's much cheaper in the long run.

Thanks to all of you for your input. I will give serious thought to buying the tuxes.
