Tulum-rent a car or rent a driver?

We will be in Cozumel and we have one day to go to Playa del Carmen to see Tulum. We want to know if you have had experiences either renting a car and driving yourself (Avis or Hertz), or hiring a cab for the day (cost and recommendations of a person or company.)
Thanks, Colman

We vacationed in Cancun a few years ago. The trip from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen is very short and the trip to Telum ruins is also very short. Renting a car for a day in Playa del Carmen is a hassle with little benefit. When you consider transport to and from the ruins and an adequate visit to the ruins, you won't have much time to explore with a car. The cruise ship can arrange everything which is probably your best bet.

The ruins are the best of Mayan ruins. It's on the ocean so its not real hot like Chichen Itaz or Koba. We almost died there, and it was not the hottest period.

I would recommend you take an organized tour for safety reasons. The Tulum ruins were unimpressive in my humble opinion.

I agree with Harry. Unless you have some interest in Toltec and Mayan ruins you're probably better off just touring Cozumel. Much of the island is protected from development so it's pristine and beautiful. There are also a town which has as much flavor as little towns on the mainland.

I don't think Tulum was all that great either BUT our tour guide at Tulum was a retired history professor from the university of mexico and a real story teller - had us sit down as he told stories from the ruins. He was very dramatic and that made it worth while. Maybe a local tour director knows when this guy is giving a tour.
