Transatlantic Voyage
Hello, I am hoping that someone on this site will be able to answer my question. We will be taking a transatlantic trip on the Celebrity Silhouette on October 22, 2011. It leaves the port outside of Rome, Italy and visits Sardinia, Palma de Majorca and Lisbon, Portugal. Arriving in Bayonne, NJ on November 2. We have done ocean cruising quite a few times but this is the first time for an Atlantic crossing. Has anyone crossed the Atlantic at this time of year and if so, what were the average temperatures? I tend to think it is almost impossible to find this information out as I have never seen weather reports for anywhere on the Atlantic but more than likely they do exist.
Thank you for any and all help. carol |
We did a TA in Nov./Dec., a few years ago, and are about to do another one Oct.28-Nov.13. However, we were headed for Brazil on the first one, and this next one is headed for Galveston. For us, the weather got warmer each day. Headed for NJ, that will probably not be the case. I'm not much help, am I. I will say that I don't remember rough seas, if that helps any, and we had a great time. Hope you have a wonderful cruise.

Check on Weather.com (Weather Channel), National Weather Service, NOAA or Weather Underground, but unfortuately weather stations are infrequent in the Atlantic). You are out of hurricane season in late October, but seas may be rougher than you would see in summer months. The seas in the Western Caribbean in early November have been the roughest that I've encountered on a cruise.

It would be cool. With the ship moving at 18 to 20 knots, you will need a wind breaker / sweater for any open deck area.
You will notice the temperature gets colder as you approach the US. You'll start out around mid-70 or better in Lisbon and may ended up around low-60 when you get to Jersey. |
Hi Carol,
My husband and I are going to one the same cruise you are - leaving Civitavecchia October 22. My husband was a career Naval officer, and crossed the Atlantic several times. He calls it the "Nasty North Atlantic"! He says be prepared for some rough seas and cold wind. He has expressed doubts about the wisdom of our taking this cruise several times. But I have to laugh, because I think the Celebrity Silhouette is going to be a bit different from a US Navy destroyer! Perhaps we will meet on board! |
Thank you, everyone for your responses. I am not afraid of rough seas as I do not get sea sick but was wondering what type of clothing to take as we like to pack light! A fleece and light weight jacket should suffice.
Roamer, hopefully, we will meet. We need to get in touch with each other before the sailing date! We will be in Rome from the 20th to the 22nd before the cruise starts (we have been to many places in Italy several times but there is always so much to see that we are looking forward to visiting Rome, again). Will you be staying in Rome for a couple of days, too? |
Hi Carol.
We love Italy and try to spend time there each year. We will be in Montepulciano for three weeks before the cruise, studying Italian language at Il Sasso Italian language school (for the 6th time - we are slow learners!). Then we will go to Civitavecchia on the 21st, stay at Casamica B&B that night before boarding the ship on the 22nd. Perhaps we could meet in Civitavecchia? If not there, on the ship. Stay in touch! |

Are you familiar with cruisecritic.com? Find the Celebrity board there and ask away. You can even find a Roll Call for your cruise so you can contact/connect with your fellow passengers.
We're booked on a Celebrity transatlantic out of Rome into Ft. Lauderdale in late November. Expecting cool weather in Rome and in the Mediterranean with warmer temps as we head southwest through the Atlantic. Think layers advised above. |
Crossed the Atlantic twice, once in June and once at the end of September/early October.
The first one was from Gdynia, Poland, via Copenhagen, Amsterdam, London, Quebec to our final destination of Montreal. The second one was from Barcelona, via Cadiz, few island stops and ended up in Ft. Lauderdale. Both times the seas were as smooth as baby's behind, sunny and warm. Never wore a rain jacket I brought, not once. Always a t-shirt, shorts, etc.... |
Hi Carol101,
We are also going on the Silhouette TA in October and I was wondering the same thing about the weather and what I should bring. Did you decide? Let me know, maybe we can meet on the boat. Celyne from Canada |
