Tour guides for Athens (Piraeus)

Hello guys. we will have a one day stop in Athens in Oct. Do I need a prearranged guide or will there be the usual army of cabbies/private tour guides at the docks jsut waiting for customers? Thanks! Larry :-)

Athens was our disembarkation port. We hired Spiros from www.athenstaxi.net to pick us up in Piraeus, take us on a tour of Athens, and drop us off at our hotel. It was a great day, and I highly recommend Spiros.

I have used Viatour in Europe. They work with all the local tour companies. They are more expensive than booking with an independent direct but they are very reputable, and you know eaxactly what you are getting. At the very least, you have a guideline and you know what the pricing levels are.

To f/u we have booked with a private operator who actually was recommended both by Percy as well as a poster on cruisecritic. His rep is quite good. I also found out that by Greek law drivers can't act as tour guides. They will take you to the places of interest but can't enter them so you have to figure a fair amt. of $$ more for the guide. We decided to do this as we may never be in this part of the world again and would like to make the most of it. Besides I'm a nut for the stories behind what we will see. My fav TV show is Jeopardy! :D
