Think of the musicians if you smoke in the bars on a cruise ship.

Talked to my DD last night who is a singer in the Wheelhouse Bar on the Grand Princess at the moment,. She is suffering badly from the smoke, as the bar is 50% smoking and 50% non-smoking. She has had severe coughing/respiratory problems for the last few weeks due to the cigarette smoke. Why do cruise lines allow smoking in bars where there are musicians playing?. Bar staff must also be affected.

DD is singing seven nights a week and her voice is giving out. If she doesn't sing they don't get paid, In New Zealand where she is from bars are all non-smoking.

this is one of the reasons we no longer cruise on Princess or HAL. You can't ever get away from it. It is ridiculous to think you can have 50% non-smoking in any room with smoking. Luckily there are alternative cruise lines. I am sorry for your daughter and hope she finds a better place to sing.

I'm sorry to hear that as well. Unfortunately those who smoke will keep on doing it if they read this or not. Good luck.

Guess what, Wheelhouse is the ONLY bar on the Princess ships that allows smoking. All other lounges and public area are non smoking (except for one small secton of the rear open deck and the Casino).

Wheelhouse is not 50% smoking at the Wheelhouse, it is 100%. That's where all the smokers gathered. Wrong place for a non-smoker.

My DW loves the Princess ships for all the non-smoking areas, they even have smoke free nights at the Casinos. Maybe your daughter can ask for a transfer to different lounge?

Thanks Eschew, they finish in about a month so will just have to put with it I guess. She was told 50% non-smoking maybe that was just to get musicians to play in the bar.

I don't think she will be doing another cruise as a musician!!

If she enjoys it, have her look at some of the other cruise lines, like Oceania or Azamara, where there is only very limited smoking and certainly not in any public lounges, etc .

My last Hal cruise there was no smoking in any public rooms.

Just chatted to DD on Facebook, A new Captain has come onboard and there will be no smoking in the Wheelhouse bar on the next cruise, she has three more to go, so is very pleased.

so sweet of you to be looking out for her best interests here, nelsonian. I know as a mom, I'd be going beserk over this.

nelsonian Aug 11th, 2009 10:14 PM

ncounty, can't really do anything but vent I guess. She managed to sort it all out. She was sounding really sick the other day and said she would sue if she got lung cancer:-).

No smoking in the Wheelhouse? Hmm ... I wonder where the smokers is going to go now. Maybe it is a new flettwide policy? I guess I will find out soon enough ...

Smoking is not allowed in cabins but permitted at their "private" balcony. One reason we don't take balcony cabins is that if you are next door to a smoker, you won't be able to enjoy your balcony.

$$ is no consolatiion for pain and suffering.

nelsonian Aug 12th, 2009 04:30 PM

True Eschew $$ is no consolation. I think there is one other bar on the Grand called the cigar bar, where smoking is obviously allowed.
