Taking Liquor Aboard?
 

Is it o.k. to take a bottle of liquor aboard a ship of the Norwegian Cruise Line? We like to have a night cap in our room without calling room service.

This subject is discussed over and over. Most lines prohibit this, but then many people ignore the rules and sneak booze on anyway. Go over to cruise critic web site and read the endless strings on this topic.

If you do bring it on, hide it in your checked luggage as they do scan and xray your carry ons and most lines confiscate any booze they find (most give it back at the end of the cruise).

Now, I don't want to admit to anything, but the small bottles like the airlines serve that can be bought in most liquor stores fit nicely in checked luggage and enough of those will provide nice night caps.

We haven't been on NCL for a while but they xray ALL checked luggage. We had a bottle of gin in one suitcase. We got our other luggage and a note saying to come get our other bag in some room because it had alcohol in it! I went, had to open the bag and give NCL the gin. We did get it back the last morning. Never said anything about my box of wine though. Now it comes in a diet tonic bottle with diet tonic in our carry on. NCL Is the only line that REALLY checks as far as we know. If there are others hopefully someone will tell us which ones.

If I put gin in my water bottle do you suppose they would sniff it?

i had vodka in a water bottle and they didn't sniff it. that's anal. they probably figure if you're that desperate to get it on the boat, have at it.

The last cruise we were on, they were selling litre bottles of spirits for cheaper than what we'd paid at the supermarket. we wished we hadn't gone to the trouble of carrying onboard. We did however HAVE to carry 6 bottles of champagne on though as they never sell bubbly cheap!

On the Star Princess I brought two bottles of vodka in my checked in luggage. No worries. I would think its the same for NCL. BTW there is a brand called Dansk which uses metal bottles so there is no chance of breakage.

On the Caribbean Princess we brought a bottle of wine and bottle of bubbly in our carry on bag. We had to open our bag and show the agent that it was not alcohol.

Jacketwatch- TWO bottles of Vodka! Was that a 3 day cruise? Next cruise I'm leaving The Crabby Old Guy at home and cruising with you LOL...Hic!

There is also brandy in plastic bottles don't remember the brand :))

I took some gin in one of the two water bottles that fit into little mesh pockets on the outside of my carry-on bag. No Problem.

We enjoyed excellent martinis in the ships bars, but we were glad to have access to market priced gin in our room.

The comment about the booze in the shops on board being cheaper than at home is true, but the catch is that when you buy it you can not take it back to your cabin on most lines - they hold it for you until the last morning.

I hope to bring wine onboard a costa cruise, we'll be in venice prior to boarding and i wanted to buy some nice italian wines to enjoy on the cruise

When I made trans-Atlantic crossings in the 1960s, drinks on board were cheap, cheap, cheap.

Now, we paid $2 for a can of Coke on NCL.

I understand charging on-shore prices at bars and mini-bars, but restricting passengers from bringing beverages on board seems unnecessarily restrictive.

Well it is "for your own safety" right? It could not have anything to do with making passengers spend more would it?

The Roy Rogers connection is that I selected the good-natured "happytrailstoyou" user name in hopes of shielding myself from some of the hostility that came my way when I first started posting my opinions on this forum under another moniker.

I'm glad I did. HTTY has worked well and this forum has become a source of considerable pleasure for me--I hope also for you and the others who make this forum fun to visit.

Well, I'm happy I'm a wine drinker, because Princess specifically states in its terms and agreements that you can bring wine on board. For my Alaska cruise next summer, I figure I'll buy a bottle in each port for my pre-dinner drink! (To share with others, of course) :)

You are correct. I usually cruise on Princess and there has never been a problem bring wine onboard at the port of embarkation.
