Staying active on a river cruise

We enjoy vacations where we can walk everywhere and maximize getting exercise that way. We are interested in taking one of those River cruises in Europe next year, but I am wondering how "active "we can be if on a small ship or riverboat a good portion of the time.

Can anyone who has taken one of these cruises, such as Viking, Uniworld, etc., comment on how much activity you can get from a river cruise? Are you on board a good portion of the day, or is there opportunity to walk around quite a bit during day excursions?

Thanks.

We took a Viking cruise two years ago. My wife are in our late 70s and our concern was that there would be too much. We were a bit taxed and I think that there was plenty of exercise. There were the daily excursions and the boats were tied up most of the day so there seemed to be plenty of time for activities.

Took a Viking Rhine River cruise last year. The boat was tied up for the day just about every day of week-long cruise. So, if you really want to get off and walk, jog, run, etc., you are certainly free to do so. For that matter you could easily walk around the upper deck on the measured course.

We have taken several Uniworld river cruises and we were almost always in port all day and you could go on organized tours or walk around the area or take a tour on your own. I think you can stay very active.

You might want to consider and AMA cruise. They have bicycles available on nearly all their vessels, and it is easy to reserve them and tour more actively on your own.

Thank you, very helpful. If/when we choose a cruise, I may check back in here with some more specific questions.
