Splendour of the Seas: Med Cruise

I see quite a few of us are taking this cruise this year - thought it would be fun to exchange ideas and pieces of research we've found in one thread.

We're on the Nov. 17th sailing, spending 2 days after the cruise in Venice. It can't get here soon enough!

So is everyone looking to do excursions on their own, or through RCCL?

I was thinking of booking the Nov 17th sailing, but my husband wants to know how's the weather during that time?

nycgirl1 Mar 30th, 2007 01:00 PM

I've read that it's definitely cooler, but can still be warm (60's) during the day. Just really depends. I'm sure we'll pack raingear just in case, but the smaller crowds and lack of sweltering heat sounds perfect to me. :)

Thanks for the info - just got off the phone with RCCL for the Nov 17th sailing.

Thanks again

Roll Call for your cruise.
We found several cruiser organized land excursions with more desireable itineraries at less cost than those offered by Celebrity.

We are on this cruise as well. We are arriving Venice day before and then spending several days in Italy after before returning home. We will probably do most shore things on our own, but have not yet decided. Main thing we are wondering about is the weather.

Hi,
Anybody cruising on the Nov 10th sailing of the Splendor?
I'm looking into booking an excursion in Turkey, but think the hubby and I will wing it in Venice, Croatia, Santorini and Corfu.
Anyone have any ideas on what is the better decision for staying in Venice after the cruise? We are staying over one night and flying out, probably early. Would you stay in Mestre or stay on Venice Island and just get up really early to get to the airport? I've been to Venice twice, but my hubby has never been there. Ideas? Opinions?

IN mu opinion if hubby has never been to Venice you ought to stay in Venice to sample it. How much time do you have pre-cruise? Are you arriving the day before ofr on the day of cruise. That will help guide you on the stay. You may have time pre-cruise to see some of Venice and thus choose to stay closer to the airport.

Thanks Curt,
we fly into Venice the day of the sailing, leaving little time to look around. Love Venice, but it is a hassle to get to and from the airport to the island and the port terminal. Guess we should just plan on staying on the island so he gets the whole experience!

We're doing the same - flying into Venice the day of the sailing, and then staying over one night afterwards. Definitely staying on the Island.

I'm having a hard time finding a hotel - can't believe how much is booked up in November already!

We are on the 17/Nov sailing. We booked our hotel long ago - experience tells us that Venice is booked up pretty much year round. Looking forward to the cruise and then some good Italian time....

My wife and I will be taking this cruise on May 12. Will post my review when we return.
Cheers,

Tk are you back and ready to tell us about it?

We were in Venice early Oct and they were just starting the "flood season" due to the high tides and water seeping up. Planks throughout for walking through San Marco square for early morning. Have you checked how it will be in November?

Just curious

I am booked Aug 4 on splendour.. anyone else going that date??

dc1955 Jun 26th, 2007 09:28 AM

A friend and I are also on the Nov. 17th sailing, and will be probably take an extra day or two after the cruise. Does any one have any hotel recommendations not too far from Piazzale Roma? Everything I have looked at is booked already.

November is definitely the rainy season in Venice. Flooding is common during high tides.

I have booked our hotels for the day before the Nov 10 cruise and a day after. We are staying on Lido in the Hotel Riviera and then at the Marriott Courtyard the day after the cruise. I love Venice, but I hate having to get up at the crack of dawn to get on a vaporetto, to get to a train or bus to get to the airport in the middle of the night. I figure by staying next to the airport that has a shuttle, it will be much simpler.
As for before the cruise, we are traveling with another couple and she has to have an elevator. A rare commodity on Venice Island, yes?
I think we will not book any excursions for Venice, Croatia, Santorini and Corfu. We will book a tour operator for Ephesus.
Anybody else out there going Nov 10th?
