Smart casual/informal attire?

From looking at this site and a few others, I am getting the feeling that for a 7 night Western Caribbean cruise, I can bring a suit for formal nights but skip bringing a sportcoat for the smart casual/informal nights. I can just wear a nice shirt and dressy slacks.
Would recent cruisers agree that the informal nights are getting more casual?

I would say that a lot depends on your cruise line.

On Celebrity, informal means jacket and slacks, and casual means collared shirt and slacks - no jeans or Tees.

They specify that informal still requires a jacket, but that may vary according to which line.

I personally adhere to the dress codes and feel when people do it enhances the cruise experience.

I also say that it depends on your cruise line. On upscale ones such as Seabourn and Silversea, people are more dressed up.

Though I've never been on Royal Caribbean, I think what you are planning is just fine. People are very casual on most mass market lines.

We have gone on RCCL and casual informal generally means no jeans. A nice long sleeve shirt, and pants will be fine. On formal night there were some men in tux's but not everyone. There were more who were not then were. A nice suit is fine.

Does that mean jeans were common on casual nights (as opposed to smart casual nights)?

Yes. You wouldn't believe what people wear on 'casual' nights on mass market lines.
