Smart casual/informal attire?
From looking at this site and a few others, I am getting the feeling that for a 7 night Western Caribbean cruise, I can bring a suit for formal nights but skip bringing a sportcoat for the smart casual/informal nights. I can just wear a nice shirt and dressy slacks.
Would recent cruisers agree that the informal nights are getting more casual?

I would say that a lot depends on your cruise line.
On Celebrity, informal means jacket and slacks, and casual means collared shirt and slacks - no jeans or Tees.
They specify that informal still requires a jacket, but that may vary according to which line.
I personally adhere to the dress codes and feel when people do it enhances the cruise experience.

We have gone on RCCL and casual informal generally means no jeans. A nice long sleeve shirt, and pants will be fine. On formal night there were some men in tux's but not everyone. There were more who were not then were. A nice suit is fine.
