Shortler Alaska Cruises
 

Message: Im planning to visit Alaska this summer- Ive heard that cruising is a good way to see the place- however Ive never been on a cruise and Im not sure I would like it- all the cruises seem to be at least 7 days, but I would prefer maybe 3 days- has anyone heard of any companies offering this? Or do you think Ferries might be a better way to do this?

I used Holland America about 12 years ago when only Princess and Holland were doing that part of the world. Today there are many more cruise lines sailing there.

Yes, cruising is a great way to see part of Alaska, but don't forget the amazing interior (land tours).

Hallo Cruiser- See, this is what happens when you try and do 6 things at once- I should have typed "Shorter" alaska cruises as I am looking for maybe 3 or 4 days- any ideas?

I know that Princess offers Alaska "sampler" cruises (and probably other cruise lines as well) of 4-5 days in length. However, usually these cruises only stop in one port due to the time it takes to sail from the embarkation port (Seattle, Vancouver) so you don't see much of Alaska.
These sampler cruises are normally offered at the beginning (May) or end (Sep) of the Alaska season. The Diamond Princess is doing a 4 night on May 4th that stops in Ketchikan. Hope this helps.

Shazza - I was never interested in cruising until I saw a menu my parents brought back! We've been on several cruises since then and it is great. There is so much to do, you can't even do all that is offered. We've been on a 3-day cruise and it is just not long enough. I looked into the ferries and it sounds very rustic. It's worth it to pay a little more (if you get a good deal) for a cruise. I hope you'll consider a 7-day if you can't find a good 3 day.

Holland America does four night cruises that end in Skagway and begin a land trip. I DO NOT recommend them, however, because it involves lots of bus time in the interior.

I think once you've been on a cruise, you'll consider 7 nights short. It flies. We prefer 12-14 night cruises. Alaska provides such great excursions and scenery, you won't have enough time for everything.
