Shore excursion info needed

Traveling to Europe in July on Millennium ship. Family of four traveling with a group of 14. Visiting following ports: Nice, Civitavecchia (for Rome), Villefranche (France), Venice, Naples, Athens, Olympia. In general, would you recommend ship excursions or private tours, and if so, in which ports. Any other info would be appreciated.

We have cruised the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Mediterranean (last year on the Millennium). It was a great cruise. I recommend taking the shore excursions in Europe as the places you want to visit are a distance from the ship, except in Malta, Barcelona and Mallorace. The reason my husband and I take shore excursions in Europe is to make sure we get back to the ship on time. If you take your own tour and there is a problem, no one from the ship is aware that you haven't returned, and the ship will leave without you. If you take a shore excursion, (which most people did), the shore excursion people make sure that your group has checked back onto the ship. It's worth it for peace of mind. <BR>Happy cruising. We loved every port - something different to see each place. In Malta, we walked from the ship to see a slide show called "The Malta Experience." I had read about it in a tour book and we found it very worthwhile - it gave a 45 minute presentation on the history of Malta which is very intersting.

Just returned from Med cruise on Grandeur and did my own excursions at Villefranche, Livorno, Civitaveechia, Naples and Malta. Used the trains and other public transportation and saved enough for another cruise. Please email me if you want details.
