shore excursion in Naples
Our cruise stops in Naples...excursion thru the ship to Pompeei & Sorrento costs $345. each. Is it feasable for my daughter & I to go on our own at a lesser cost? The ship will be in Naples from 7AM to 7PM

First of all there will be lots of taxi/guides at the dock when you disembark.
My private guide was 15 minutes late and soI was taking to several of them while I was waiting. They were very pleasant ,happy, jovial and spoke good English.. I told one fellow called Giovanni, "if my driver does not show up in the next 10 minutes, you and I are gone "! here is his e-mail [email protected]. His name is Giovanni Rotondo another is : Monti Aldo at [email protected] |
Thank you for this info. SO DO YOU THINK A PRIVATE DRIVER IS THE WAY TO GO?

If you can get any of these two fellows ,then that would be fine. He will be there waiting for you when you disembark.
You will know the price ahead of time and you will be off as soon as you get off the cruise ship. However, if you are unable to get a private driver ahead of time, I can assure you there will be plenty of then dockside. The trip down the Almafi coast down the winding roads to Sorrento is just lovely and you will feel like James Bond speeding around those curves !! |
My daughter and I just came back from a cruise that stopped in Naples and we did our own shore excursion, without a guide. We walked to the train station in Naples (which was an adventure in itself....the traffic was pretty crazy and there aren't real sidewalks in places due to some construction) in about 20 minutes, took a train to the Ercolano station and explored the ruins at Herculaneum for a couple of hours. (Herculaneum is similar to Pompeii, just smaller and much less crowded) Then we walked back to the train station and took a train to Sorrento, which was about an hour away, maybe slightly less. Once in Sorrento, we walked all around and enjoyed the town and then took the 4:30pm fast ferry back to the port in Naples, arriving just after 5:00pm. It is a very do-able trip and much less expensive than a private guide or ships tour. I think we spent about 8 euros for the train trips and 22 euros for the fast ferry for the 2 of us. Admission to Herculaneum was 11 euro each, if memory serves me correctly.

If you want to save money, then take the train and do the trip on your own. If you want to get the first-class treatment, then hire a private driver/guide and do the trip by car. In both cases, you won't pay any more than the cruise ship excursion, and you'll have a superior time, in my opinion.

The ferrys from Naples pier work very well and you can take it for to reach Sorrento, you can also spend half day with private guide and visit, Positano and other sites, once you sow Sorrento by your own.
The fey ticket from Naples to Sorrento cost 7 Euro each way. See also www.shoretripnaples.altervista.org and also www.shoretripnaples.altervista.org/economic.htm |
I am a local driver in Livorno and Florence and I have heard from many colleagues that Benvenuto Limos is one of the best companies providing shore excursion in Naples, Pompei and the Amalfi coast.
