Ship Design
 

I am an Interior Design student researching travel design and I would like to know from frequent travelers what their ship travel design pet peeves and favorites are. Also, have you thought of an improvement to solve a problem you often face - I'd like to know. Thanks!

We love Carnival's Legend and our cruises on her but really feel all the semi-nudes are very out of place for a ship sailing the Caribean. The semi-nudes are in the elevators, on the walls on WIDE stairs and along the prominade. They certainly don't give a flavor of the Caribean. A ship decorated like her should be sailing in Europe and the Meditaranium (SP).

While this is not exactly a design problem, I have to agree with bonnijns. I was a little shocked too when I saw complete nudity art on Conquest. Even though this is classic art, I doubt it is suitable for children. Speaking of design problem, the most ridiculous I saw was placement of a basketball court right above the spa on Princess Grand class ships. That eventually led to the closure of basketball courts due to complaints from spa patrons.

I think the glass centrums aboard RCI's Radiance class of ships are simply stunning and amongst the prettiest ships out there.

The Solariums on their ships are refuges of quiet (generally) and are themed in various motifs.

I do not care for the design of their Freedom class or Voyager class as they are interior "promenades" that feel like the lobby of a convention hotel.

I really dislike the dark colors and neons deployed in many Carnival ships. I had heard this was changed on the newer ships but did not see it myself on GLory which was dark and had too much too much going on. Also the stadium seating at the pool makes for a congested space.

I worked as an Assistant Purser on P&O cruise ships several years ago. Traditionally cabins on the port side are even numbered and odd on the starboard side, but still passengers got lost. I suggest that throughout accommodation decks, port and starboard sides consistently feature different colour schemes. Eg port gold, starboard silver ...or whatever.

Larger and more maps on each deck with a "you are here" indication.
