Seeking Fodorites' Comments on River Cruise

Fodorites really came through with trip reports, comments and advice before we took our river cruise in Russia. Desperately seeking same before our upcoming Viking River Cruise, Amsterdam to Budapest! Thanks, Mimi

My husband and I took the Amsterdam to Budapest Viking cruise several years ago. We brought along his 95 year old aunt for her birthday present.

We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. While the aunt did not participate in all the shore activiites, she loved it too.

I am planning to take another of Viking's cruises one of these days.

I will say that the majority of the travelers were senior citizens, but there were a few younger people.

The tours were great; the food very satisfactory and the level of activity just fine. It's a most interesting itinerary; worth the time and $$$

Thanks Chris. What time of year did you go? We're going mid-June and I'm thinking of weather and how to pack. I'm guessing there was quite a bit of walking, so good shoes and/or sneakers will be needed. Any other info you could share would be welcomed. Mimi

We cruised from Amsterdam to Basel in 2007 and are booked to cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam later this year.
Obviously we thoroughly enjoyed the 2007 cruise or we would not have booked another. We are seniors, still fit and enjoy meeting people, and found the mix of leisurely cruising, walking tours around the towns, meeting with people from other countries, and comfort and good food on the boat made a really enjoyable holiday. We enjoyed the fact that if we didn't want to participate in the day's activities, we could just relax on the boat.
We didn't take any dress-up clothes (travelling from Australia we had a very limited luggage allowance) but found they were not necessary. Polo shirt and long pants for my husband at dinner, and top and pants for me were quite adequate. Naturally you will need comfortable walking shoes.
Our 2007 cruise was in May and the weather was in the low thirties (celsius) most days, so we were in shorts and tops most days - just hoping the weather will be as good this year.
Let's hope we both have a great holiday.
