Seeking a recommendation for a serious Greek Isles cruise
 

I'm seriously into archeology and history, and would like to find a high-quality tour of the Greek Isles this year. I've sifted through hundreds of Google leads and mostly found ones that go to two or three islands in five days aboard large cruise ships. That isn't what I'm lookings for.

The ideal cruise would visit at least half a dozen islands, may or may not include stops in Turkey, and be led by someone who understands the region's history and culture. It might last ten days; it might last two weeks. It ought to be on a ship that carries fewer than 50 passengers; a 'luxury' cruise would be nice but is not the first priority.

I thought it would be Arrangements Abroad's "Turkey and the Greek Islands" tour in June/July, but the itinerary turned out to be a huge disappointment when the brochure arrived yesterday.

Has anyone out there been on or heard of a tour that meets the above description?

They have extensive itineraries that may interest you (Greece, Turkey, Italy, etc.) and excellent shore excursions tuned toward learning, etc.

Although a bigger boat than you have in mind, you might consider Swan Hellenic's Minerva II. Also the tours operated by the Smithsonian Institute.

Dear Neal: Thanks for asking the question. I, too, am looking for a comprehensive cruise/tour of this region in September 2004. I appreciate all suggestions. Would prefer at least two weeks combining mainland Greece and the Island.

Have either of you considered just hiring a sailboat and captain and picking where or when you want to stop and see?

Also Crystal and Seabourn do great Greek Isle cruises- but they are super expensive...

If the time and money is not a big issue ; you can hire a gulet or sailing yacht with skipper, hire an archeologist&guide which are very often the case here in Turkey and visit whereever you wish to see and stay as long as you desire.

Maybe sounds difficult or to easy for you but this is the fact...
