Salmon fishing in Ketchikan
Has anyone been salmon fishing on a 1/2 charter that they could recommend? There are four of us and we are totally inexperienced, we have been deep-sea fishing like twice. I have been to the Ketchikan .com site, and of course, there are lists of charters available, but it is nice to have a first hand recommendation.

In Ketchikan, they have this bridge over the river to Creek Street.
We were there last year in Sept., and it was full of the rotting carcases of the poor salmon (as is their life cycle), what a stink and alot of people were just fishing from the bridge. make your own plans- the weather, most likely, will not be too bad. |
The salmon run in Ketchikan is in late August and early September. If you are there at that time, you can catch limits of salmon by renting a rod from one of the guys near the bridge over Creek Street and simply snagging the salmon as they wait to enter the creek.
Be sure to bring a cooler and some ice. Kids below the bridge will collect them for you and also clean them. Have a great cruise Tom |
My family goes with Northern Lights the most. :) Excellent vender. You can also rent poles and obtain a license at a stand by the Lumberjack show and fish from the marine. HOWEVER- I don't know of any cruise line that will allow you to bring your fish on board unless you have it prepared for that night's dinner. Verify if your line will, none will store it for you. You can have it smoked and shipped or dry iced and shipped. Costly but worth it. :)

Thank you to last poster - I was wondering what one would do with caught salmon while on vacation - not sure I would want a dead fish in my luggage.

Ooooops, sorry for the bad advice. I cruise all over the world and always try to fish when I can and bring home fillets to enjoy.
You are right. Unless you are the "catch 'um, bring 'em home" type, it wouldn't make much sense. Have a great cruise anyway. |
