Run of Ship

What does it mean when it says "run of ship?"

ROS means you will be assigned a cabin sometime before the ship sails. This generally varies from 2 weeks to when you check in for your cruise. The downside is you don't have any opportunity to select your own cabin. Some people must have an ouside cabin for the window (although sometimes you can get outside ROS which will get you an outside cabin). Some people must be in a cabin mid-ships as they are prone to seasickness and this area of the ship tends to be less rocky.
The upside is that you pay less for the cabin. Often you will be upgraded to a much higher level and more expensive cabin than you paid for. If the cruise line has empty cabins -- even suites --, they might as well put you in them and make you happy.

We always book inside ROS and have never had a problem with it. If you can accept the lowest level cabin that is on the ship, you will not be disappointed.

Some people believe that ROS means that you get the best available room when your's is selected. That is not true. It is true that you can save money and be pleasantly surprised. You could end up in the dungeon.

Clients that I have booked ROS have had mixed results. Beware.
Hi Deb,

Most often you do get a better cabin but it is a gamble. You may get a cabin under the disco or the galley.

When you travel with more than two in a cabin it is not advisable since you may get a cabin that does not have an upper berth but one with a rollaway. You can not change the cabin once it is assigned.

Quite a few passengers do like say the lower outside (window) cabins since they are on the lowest passenger deck and since the window on most ships are high up you do not have to stand up to see sights on shore. Also, the elevators take you where you wish to go on the ship fairly quickly.

Of course, as was stated above some passengers do get upgraded from an inside cabin to an outside and some even to a suite.

Most times if you book an obstructed stateroom you will move up to an unobstructed one.

I personally would take the ROH if I booked the lowest, most reasonable stateroom on the ship and take my chances.

It is all a crap-shoot.

Paul
