Is that you Hobo, looking for a replacement for your Song of Flower cruise? All I can say Royal Olympic is not in the same class as Radisson Seven Seas. Not the same class of cruise ship by a long shot. You'd be much better off with Seabourn or Silversea, if you can swing it. they are both doing the Amazon -- Silversea starts in November.

Hi Hobo,

I sailed the Voyager but not to the Amazon.

Wonderful Greek hospitality. Very fast ship and port intensive.

I enjoyed the food immensely except for the Greek Sampler night. No comparison to actual Greek home-cooked or restaurant food. All other evening dinners were continental.

The lower category cabins are quite small but if you are looking for a comparison to an upscale line you should book a Sky Suite. A 375 sq. ft. room plus a 200 sq. ft. balcony. The butler service is extraordinary and the knows how to serve a party plus he caters to your every whim.

Little tidbit of information here. The company had to change the name of their new ships to Olympia from Olympic due to the protests of the Greek Olympic Committee.

To be more informative, the sky suite is 375 which INCLUDES the balcony so the actual cabin size is about 220 sq ft - small for the largest cabin on the ship. And the entire line's name was changed to Royal Olympia, not just the new ships.

NEWS - Cruise

ROC's Voyager hits object, undergoes repairs (10/16/2002)

ATHENS, Greece -- Royal Olympic Cruises' ship the Olympia Voyager hit an underwater object while maneuvering to avoid hitting another ship, which caused "minor structural damage" to the ship.
No passengers or crew were injured in the incident, which occurred near the Greek port of Patmos, ROC said. But the ship was taken out of service and currently is undergoing repairs in Piraeus. The line said it would be returned to service in time to sail its Nov. 7 transatlantic cruise.

Passengers on board the Voyager were transferred to the Aegean 1, which was chartered from Golden Seas Cruises, the line said, and completed the seven-day cruise.

Passengers on subsequent Olympia Voyager sailings will be transferred to the Olympia Countess for their cruises; Olympia Countess' scheduled three- and four-day cruises will be assumed by the Aegean 1.

Thanks to you all for the input. Sandy, while we definitely respond well to luxury, we are also adventurous enough to consider varied levels of comfort; but I must say in traveling along the equator cool comfort is top choice.
Appreciate your assessments Peter and Paul; and Starship, very interested in your news item regarding the near-Patmos incident. All told, we probably won't be following South American rivers aboard the Voyager. I think we are looking for a bit more "cush".

Peter,

Stop with your usual nonsense.

I was IN cabin #7011 Sky Suite. It is twice the size of the regular sky suites and measured 376.4 sq. ft.

The veranda is almost twice the size of the other Sky Suites and measured 219.2 sq. ft.

The name of the cruise line (unless they changed it in the last month) continues to be Royal Olympic Cruises.

If I told you I had eggs for breakfast, you would tell me I had ham, since that what Dr. Suess told you to say.

Then why didn't you advise Hobo to get cabin 7011 instead of directing him to "a sky suite". Do you think he might have been a bit disappointed to be in a 220 square foot suite when he was believing you at 375???

Boys, boys boys . . . if you both can't play together in the same sandbox then you should get out and go home . . .

I have travelled the Orinoco River in cabin 7011 on the Olympia Voyager and have the following to say. Sailing up the Orinoco River in Venezuela on this ship, with this room and balcony was a dream . . .

The cabin was wonderful. It was well designed and seemed larger than it actually was. The suite has a walk-in closet that is large enough to change in. The bathroom while not large was well designed and there seemed to be a spot for everything. The cabin itself is comfortable and will nicely hold a couple. However, if you like to entertain in your cabin I will warn you that it does get crowded "inside" after four people. There is also no way of hiding the "bed" should you decide to entertain.

In my opinion the "piece-de-resistance" was the balcony. In cabin 7011 it is almost the same size as the cabin itself. I swear you could have held a square dance on it and still had room for the fiddler! A vast expanse with a table and four chairs plus two comfortable loungers. It was almost double the size of the other Sky Suites' balconies. It is also very private. I've sailed and seen balcony cabins on other lines and can safely say that the balcony attached to Suite 7011 on the Voyager is the largest I have ever encountered.

I have also sailed Radisson and Seabourn and yes, I would agree that the dining on those two lines is distinctly above the "fare" offered on Royal Olympic. However, I find the Greek hospitality warmer and more relaxed than that on the other two lines.

Be very careful with Royal Olympic--Hobo. Some of their ships are around 50 years old. Virtual rust buckets!!
Have sailed on a 3 of them in the Med. Good itinerary, but terrible, rusty ships!

Hi Hobo,
Remember me? You clued me in last week about the Song of Flower cancellation.
Very interesting to see you enquiring about the Olympia Voyager So. America cruise as we just booked the Dec. 5-22 cruise. We have sailed on the Royal Olympic line before, and although it is not in the same class as the Radisson ships, we had a very enjoyable 28 day Amazon river cruise on the Stella Solaris. Yes, the ship was old and not glitzy, but we had the most wonderful waiter, Costas, and found everything else comfortable and without problems. Lots of Greek hospitality.
So when I found the Dec. 5 cruise for a great price, I booked it. It's not what we had planned(rssc) but we will at least be in the warmth of So. America for part of Dec.
If you want further details on the price we got for the cruise, please e-mail me directly and I would be happy to respond.
Happy cruising.
Joanne

I did a walk-through of Royal Olympic's ships in Athens and Mykonos and I would never sail the Apollon, Odysseus and the Stella Oceanis. I would consider the World Renaissance and Countess. I would sail the Stella Solaris but then it is not much for creature comforts. I guess I will have to agree with "Warning."

Now that you are through quarreling (good work, Rita!) I'll step in for a moment more to say thanks to you all for your input. Warnings, raves and what-else. Joanne, one of our first thoughts after the SoF cancellation was "what about the Olympic Voyager?" We book most of our cruise through TravLtips; although their specialty is freighters, they negotiate some excellent prices with cruise lines, drawing from a clientele who can and do enjoy lenthy cruises. I have always been VERY satisfied with their services and feel a mesaure of knowledge and honesty I have felt no where else. I am not with them-- on the other side of the country, actually.
We have cruised on the World Ren; short Greek Island cruise, many years ago. It was so-so; too multinational; every announcement in five languages and being seated with people with whom you couldn't communicate. Sometimes that is special; that time it wasn't.
As for where we are going next...Texas! But Joanne, let us know about your Dec. 5 cruise. The Orinoco sounds appealing!
