Rough waters from NY to NE/Canada?
 

I am researching a 5, 6,or 7 day cruise out of NY to NE/Canada for a group of 8-10 couples. Not all have cruised before. Is it rough sailing on this route in June or July?<BR>What ship would you recommend? Any cruises out of Phila. or Baltimore to NE/Canada? Would NY to Bermuda be rougher sailing?

Generally the cruise to Bermuda, since it is very far into the Atlantic, should be the roughest but I have sailed there 5 times and never experienced very rough seas. I just returned from a NE?Canada cruise on June 9 and also have sailed the Bermuda trip several times. No sailing was rougher than another with both destinations just about the same. However, as with land storms, they can pop up anytime no matter where you're going. Most ships can handle rough seas without major discomfort to passengers, but take the sea sickness precautions with you. <BR>Just go and have a great time- don't worry!

Having done Boston to Halifax in July I can tell you we had smooth seas. Have traveled to Bermuda from Boston nine times and the worst seas were in mid-October. Since I'm prone to sea sickness for me it's a chance I take.. but normally we go the end of May and beginning of September (or the first two weeks). In all these years we have only had one year when we had to leave Bermuda a day early because of a storm coming and the Captain skirted the storm. Would I go again...absolutely.. The cruise to Canada along the coast is wonderful..we loved Halifax, St. John and Portland.. plese write for more info on those ports (and pictures).. This year we are doing the RC Brilliance from the UK to Boston.. trans atlantic...talk about the chance of being seasick...lol

Pat, we were on the Horizon to Bermuda on June 1st and we hit a storm and people were being knocked around quit a bit. My husband had on the patch but was still sick. I had expected it though because I did a lot of research and knew it could get a bit rocky. I however would not let that prevent you from sailing to Bermuda. My husband didn't want to go for that very reason and even that bumpy last night would deter him from going back again.

Oops, I mean would Not deter him from going back. If I hadn't done the research and read what other people had said I probably would have been very frightened. But I read a lot of message boards so I was prepared for the choppy seas (I think they said 15 to 20 ft waves). I won't go into details, but it ended up being one more story to at home. The staff is so prepared for anything that we felt in very capable and professional hands.

Thanks for all of the info. We have done two cruises in the past, both out of Miami, so I had no experience out of NY, Phila, or Baltimore. I think the group is leaning towards the NE/Canada trip, but I'm checking out Bermuda too.

So many ships from NY and Boston are doing the NE/Canada trip you shouldn't have a problem finding the right ship. One of the advantges of going out of NY is that you would visit Newport, R.I. and perhaps Martha's Vineyard, Boston (we are from Boston) and perhaps Bar Harbor, Booth Bay, St. John, Halifax (love that city) Sydney and perhaps Quebec.. summer should be a perfect time.

Just keep in mind that the weather can be chilly in NE/Canada, be sure to bring a windbreaker and/or sweater. Also lots of fog and dampness in Nova Scotia, bring an umbrella. Good cruise but not like Miami/Caribbean weatherwise.

Franks right, plenty of fog/showers on the upper East Coast. If you plan to visit Peggy's Cove go in the afternoon. In the morning there is a good chance you will see nothing.<BR><BR>Another tidbit, if you are a light sleeper, do not book a cabin on the upper two decks or the foghorn will keep you awake.<BR><BR>Paul
