Rhine river cruise
I'm looking for feedback on river cruising on the Rhine. Both positive & negative information would be appreciated. I'm trying to compare Viking, Uniworld & Avalon cruise lines.

Hi Pandagirl,
You can get lots and lots of feedback if you go to the www.cruisecritic.com boards. Once you access the website, look at the top for the "boards" category, click that open, scroll down to the Special Interest Cruising, look for River & Canal cruises and click that open. There is so much stuff there on what you are looking for. You will have to register, if you are not a member, to do any posting. Good luck.

Any more info you want to share here? What you are interested in? Past cruise experiences? Your ages? Activity levels? Those are 3 great companies, but one may fit you in a way better than another. Also AMA does the Rhine. You might look at them.

My wife and I have done both the Viking and Uniworld cruises on the Rhine. Overall they're both rather good, it's such a pretty area you could probably row through bits of it and still have fun.
The food/quality of service is fairly similar, so the main thing to check is they have the itenary you want - not all lines will stop at the same places. We went with these folks in the end http://www.rivervoyages.com/ and found them pretty helpful.
Good luck and enjoy your cruise!
Mike

Thanks for the feedback. My friend & I had completed an Avalon Rhine River Cruise the 1st week in May & were disappointed. We had been on 2 Viking & 1 Uniworld cruises & anticipated that this would be as wonerful. Having an involved cruise director is so important & ours was aloof & condesending. There has been a drought & the river was becoming unnavigable which wasn't her fault, but her handling of the situation called for a more "hands on" approach". The "trip" to the Black Forest was nothing more than a bus ride to a sovenir shop. We made it as far as Strasbourg, France but could go no further due to the level of the river. Again, not their fault. Viking & Uniworld chose to not go as far, a plus for Avalon. The food was unimaginative & it would have been nice to have some local fare

Sorry to hear this trip was disappointing for you. and I'lll bet it wasn't too cheap either. Bad personnel - I just don't understand it. They're in the people business. No excuses for that.
We are going on a Viking Russia trip in October. Hope it turns out better than your river trip did.
