Dot - we have taken a Grand Circle river cruise on the Main, Rhine and Danube...Amsterdam to Vienna. Do not know how long you are talking about. This was about 15 days. Fabulous! The castles along the Rhine are very picturesque. if you're just in Germany, you can, for example, take a train from Frankfurt to Rudesheim and take a ferry ride along the "castle" section of the river. Can hop on or off along way- St. Goars. Baccarach, and lots of wonderful small towns. Can stay in these too.Or return to a city like Frankfurt or Wiesbaden for night. I believe there is KD line which also does overnights of short duration. They have a web site. Good luck! Mary

Dot,
We have done the Rhine and been on some parts of the Rhone. The Rhine is a much busier and larger river with more going on and more varied sightseeing and stops. Rhone is smaller, quieter and more boring from my viewpoint. All depends on what you are looking for. I happen to prefer Provence and the Rhone area from the road rather than the river. Happy trip.

Dot, I have been on the Rhine river cruise, and it was incredible. The castles, the views are breathtaking. I enjoyed all the stops with Cologne being my favorite. I have never done the Rhine, but I am sure it is wonderful too. I can't imagine an ugly river cruise in Europe!! :-)

Dot- we did the RHONE river fruise from Arles to Lyon..While it is a slower cruise, it goes thru some gorgeous scenery, and fabulous wine areas-- So if you are into French wines and want to see the vineyards, go truffle digging,do some antiquing, and see soe great cities- then the RHONE is wonderful...
Just be aware the river ships are way smaller than regular US cruise ships, you only have 1 seating for dinner, tiy amount of entertainment and no pool- just an upper deck or upper deck and jacuzzi-- but we did have a great time and saw areas that we now want to go back to for longer times.....

Andy is right about the ship size. I forgot to mention about that. Yes, it is smaller, but I found that I really enjoyed that experience even more than the larger cruise ships(which I love too). Our ship had EXCELLENT food!! It was so good that when it stopped in ports, people stayed on to eat instead of getting off. There was one bar on the ship, and everyone hung out in there and talked. It was very personable. The rooms were large considering that the ships are small. We had a king size bed, and it was a regular room (no suite). It was my favorite cruise (of all the ones that I've done). :-)
