RCCL is not the cruise line for you if you are a non smoker, they do not have any non smoking bars only non smoking areas, the smoke does not understand and gets everywhere it is unaceptable.

John, I have to disagree with you on this one. Unless things have changed, all dining rooms on RCCL ships are non-smoking. Allowing smoking in bars shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Carnival Paradise was a non-smoking ship (as were Renaissance ships) both of which couldn't survive. I think most of the major cruise lines try to do an excellent job of keeping smokers as well as non-smokers happy while still making a profit to stay afloat (literally).

How can you disagree the Restraunt is not a bar, surely it is not beyond the wit of RCCL to make one bar totally non smoking, having non smoking areas is similar to having non weeing areas in swimming pools, Why do we all have to suffer smoke one bar is not a unreasonable request.

John, you do have a point. Perhaps the problem might be where to have the live entertainers etc. My guess is the bars that allow smoking would have the most action and the most fun going but there could be a quiet bar (space permitting) that is smoke free for those who want a totally smoke free environment. Most cruise ships that I've been on do have excellent ventillation though so I don't think it's normally a problem. I suspect that from a cruise line's point of view, smoking and drinking go hand in hand which means more $$$ to them!

Just returned from a B2B on the Radiance. To my delight, the schooner bar was completely non smoking. I think she is the only RCCL ship that has this.

Wow, I didn't know Radiance did that. John, I am a musician and suffer a lot because of smoke. I get really sick when around it. it really makes me mad that they have these fabulous wine bars and then don't enforce any smoking policy. Our country and many around the world are gettting the message that indoor smoking pollutes us all. On a cruise ship, smokers have ample places to light up outdoors and it is a shame that bars still allow it. I have written to management many times about it.Be persistent and God bless you. I know how it feels to be at the mercy of a few smokers. I get ill on almost every cruise. We've been doing more land-based vacations in non-smoking places. people who are not sensitive or allergic cannot understand our pain.

Where might these cities/countries be as I've never been to one?

New York, do you have your head in the sandtrap? For one, new York city bars and restaurants are smoke free. So is CA. Most of Canada, Ireland has gone smokefree as has Italy, Sweden, most of S Africa, well I could go on. here's a link. Educate yourself before you laugh at others. http://www.cu-smokefree.org/

LLindaC, certainly no offense intended. I just interpreted

as towns and cities....not restaurants or even bars. As a non-smoker I really haven't found smoking as a problem on our recent cruises except for sometimes in the casinos. I guess that's going to be the case in casinos on land or sea.

No it does not have to be a problem with enlightened management or governments who ban smoking

John, think about what would happen to our taxes? There is an unbelievable amount of revenue raised from tobacco tax (sin tax) I hope they never make tobacco illegal. Governments depend on that tax revenue. Without it the rest of us would have to cough up (no pun intended) and we wouldn't have any money left to go on cruises.

Oh gee, anytime you mention tobacco it gets nuts. We are musicians and love to hear music, dance and dine out. When it's smoky, I get sick. I've had to visit the hospital on 3 cruises out of 12 because of bronchial problems. The years of exposure have left my system weak. Yes, we travel to cities for long weekends to dance and sing. New York, Orlando, San Francisco, etc. Today, Bermuda went smoke free. Chicago did too, it will be fully enforced in 2 years. Same for Washington, DC. The gov't isn't "doing it" the majority of people are non-smokers and don't want to stink after work or going out.The minority who smoke can take their filthy habit outside, no big deal.

However half the dry cleaners would go out off buisness as we would not need to remove the smell from our clothes, and sales of aftershave and perfumes would also reduce.

Luckily, cigarette smoke doesn't bother me. Showing my age when many relatives and friends smoked so I grew up around the smell. Cigar smoke does. What bothers me the most is people who drown themselves in colognes. That makes me nauseous especially in elevators.

Llinda, are there any smoke free ships you could cruise on? (there use to be but not sure if they survived?)

newyork, I don't know of any. Of course, I never go near a casino and for the most part can avoid it in certain clubs. However, we had chain smokers around us and whenever we opened our balcony door, it drifted in the cabin. Some ships- such as the Sensation- have centrally located bars and you literally have to walk through clouds of smoke to go anywhere.

Here's a thought...try Oceania. I understand there is NO SMOKING allowed on the balconies. I believe smoking is allowed in very limited areas that you could likely avoid. They have some excellent itineraries and good pricing. It may be the closest thing to a no smoking ship.
