QM 2: Formal Evenings: Black Tie "or Formal Dark Suit"; necktie ok?

Hello

A male friend and I will be taking the Queen Mary this July Transatlantic... For formal dining evenings, while I don't have a tux (which seemed to me all right given the "or formal dark suit"), I do have a handsome formal black jacket and pants, white shirt and a black NECKTIE. My friend similarly only has neckties. For those who've travelled on the Queen Mary before, for the formal evenings, are bowties de rigueur for men? (I've never worn one!)

Thanks, Daniel

Hi Daniel

I'm used to seeing you on the Canada board. Sounds like a great cruise. I suggest you do as I have recommended to so many people - register at cruisecritic.com and then go to the Cunard section under roll calls. Ask your question there and you will get all the answers you can handle. In the meantime all of the cruising I have done a dark suit and regular tie is perfectly acceptable. Even the longer more formal cruises that has been fine. Enjoy!!

I've sailed on the Queen Mary 2, QE2 and Queen Victoria 16 times and you'll be fine with a necktie! Your formal black jacket sounds like a nice change from the typical tuxedo and the QM2 embraces formal variations (kilts, military uniforms, national ethnic formal attire) not to mention more chic variations. Have fun!

Thanks traveller69 for the advice about Cruise Critic... I've quite enjoyed the reviews I've read there.

Thank you vickiebypass... my Dad as it turns out has offered me use of the bowtie he wears for "black tie" evenings, but it's good to know that the neckties I've purchased will be adequate for the formal evenings.

I'm so looking forward! DAN

Dan - I am happy I was able to help. Cruise critics has been an invaluable website for us over the years of cruising. We were able to meet fellow passengers beforehand and arrange private tours in ports etc. Its an excellent source of information.
I want to thank you for your incredible trip reports. I especially appreciate your report on Victoria and the museum (I was with them for many years). Keep the reports coming and enjoy your cruise!!!

You're welcome traveller 69... and what an amazing museum you were a part of... the Royal BC sticks out as one of the best I've been to in my travels.

I promise to keep writing reports! And thank you for your compliment!

Best wishes, Daniel

You are going to love every single second aboard the QM2. I found it to be an almost perfect experience. I just wish I could afford to always take her back and forth, I would never fly again!!! Enjoy!!
