Port in Civitavecchia, Italy
 

We are taking a cruise departing from Civitavecchia, Italy, in April. If our flight arrives in Rome on time, (we have arranged transfers from the airport to the port), we may have a few hours in between when we are allowed on the ship. If anyone has been in this port, what types of facilities do they have (i.e. areas to sit, bottled water, food). Also, if anyone knows of a reliable car service that we could hire, upon our return to Civitavecchia, to go into Rome, we would appreciate that information. We do not want to take the train. Thank you.

When we stopped there last summer, there was not much to see or do. I did see several services that offer private tours to Rome. Are you leaving from Rome? Why not stay in Rome or have the same service that you had to tkae you from port to Rome?

We are leaving from the port in Civitavecchia. We have been there before, but I am wondering if the cruise terminal has anything (a lounge for cruise line customers waiting for the next cruise & board the ship). We will be returning after the cruise to Civitavecchia; then we are going to take a cab/car service to Rome and are staying there a few extra days. Hope this clarifies things.

Others may disagree but I thought the port & the town
was pretty dismal. Can't help w/car service as my
package included delivery & pick-up by a service that
the operator used.

airport shuttle and city shuttle makes an excellent base

train from Ostiense to port cheapest or hire a driver

shuttle though the hotel a bit more.

Always best to stay around Rome not at the dodgy port

Qwovadis is correct. In and out six times. There is no cruise terminal. Our cruise ship (Holland Am) had a large tent area next to the ship for check in. If not using the cruise ship transport you will be dumped at the entrance to the port and an internal free shuttle bus will take you to your check in point. If you have been there before not sure why you are asking the question. We always take the train to and from Rome so cannot recommend a car service. But RomeCabs seem to get good rec all the time.

The port itself is no big deal - we did not have a tent but a metal warehouse-type building.

The town is lovely, has a pedestrian type walkway with shopping, to the left along the main road is a cathedral and behind it a couple of blocks is the local outdoor market. Going to the right is a waterfront park, amusement rides and pretty scenery, across the street from it is a McDonalds, other restaurants & ice cream shops, more quaint shops & streets, etc.

Most people ride thru to the port and never see this interesting, clean city.

Easy miss alot of good things-as we have found in other places and won't do again.

I have cruised out of Civitavecchia a number of times and have used the train and car services. Most recently we used Mario Sepe for our transfer from Rome to the port and from the port to the airport. He did a nice tour for us on the way out of town and does a more extensive tour of the city if you would like to do that. I first learned about him from some women we met on a cruise several years ago who used him for a full day tour to Rome, and loved him and his tour.
