HI ParrotMom - We got our yellow fever shots at a local public health branch (In Canada). I don't know about the States - Percy is Canadian too so he would have got his at a public health clinic as well I think. If you go to passporthealthma.com it should tell you where to get them in Maine. Enjoy the cruise!

FYI - MA is Massachusetts, not Maine (ME). Try a traveler'shealth clinic in MA (yellow pages or Internet for the closest to you), it may not be inexpensive, but is good for 10 years.

Hi ParrotMom

Hi charli
Hi traveller69.

Yes,. I got my Yellow Fever vaccine at the local health clinic.

The cost is rather high relative to the other vaccines we are used to getting...but as has been mentioned it is good for 10 years.

I am not sure about getting off the cruise ship in the Amazon, how strict they might be about the Yellow Fever vaccine.

I was in San Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and then from Rio de Janeiro I flew to Manaus( in the Amazon) for 5 days.

It was stated that customs in Rio de Janeiro could refuse you to flight to Manaus if you did not have the Yellow Fever vaccine...

I thought to myself, boy !! that is all I need..... to be at the Rio de Janeiro airport pleading with the Customs Agent to let me fly to Manaus ,even though I do not have my Yellow Fever Vaccine.

So I got the vaccine , I am glad I did because I am going to Africa in 2009 and would have needed it to the places I plan to visit.

Migth as well get it and have peace of mind for the next 10 years.

. Merry Christmas everyone

Hi Percy.. yes, we need a shot according to the Princess people who say they will not let us on the ship and we cannot visit Devils Island and one other spot..Just booked this cruise yesterday and I'm tired of this whole thing...can't change any departure dates with out a special fee which negates any other savings...My head is spinning from this. Parrot Pop is going to hit the roof shortly..lol..What was a bargain cruise is turning out to be $$$.. Now, we will wait for February and see if H/A drops prices on their Noordam..otherwise we'll have to look for bookings to Rome.. One thing I have learned..booking air fare, hotels, etc. is much, much less expensive and less aggravation.. then "cruise deals". Lucky you .. going to Africa-- Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year

ParrotMom,

If you can conveniently get to Brookline, there is a tropical medicine group at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center.

I've been to Brazil a few times now, and I would highly recommend you go ahead and get the shot. You've gotten one suggestion from the previous poster - but where I live, I just did a search on "vacinations" and got a list of places that did them. You can call and ask about pricing - here, it tends to swing pretty wildly. Because I travel all the time on business, and go to some pretty awful places, I think I've had pretty much every shot you can get. Yellow fever is a staple, so I would just go ahead, check around and get it.....

HI Percy! Ok I said Maine by mistake - have been to Boston many times and love it. Both of the websites I posted are for Mass not Maine just a slip of the brain as it was late at night. Hope all is forgiven!! On our Amazon cruise were not allowed to board the ship HAL without proof of the yellow fever shot along with the Visa.

There are many spots here in the MetroWest area.. including going to the Mass. Medical Center in Worcester ($300.00 each) and when I checked out the site found at least half a dozen within a few miles...but best of all is a CDC center in Worceser where the shot is only $90.00 each... Percy this cruise line is driving me batty and Parrot Pop is going to start with the help of the latest travel magazine find flights from Miami to Manaus one way... For the next ten years.. 2009 we are doing another t/a.. do you think I need it for Cartegena, Spain, France, Rome..lol.. 2010 may bring us cruising from the UK to Ireland, Scotland, etc.lol Think I'll pack alot of insect repellent...wipes and sprays.lol

Yes I am sure ParrotPop is pulling his hair out.

It will be hot in Manaus,,when I was there in March it was 105 F !! and a very humidity !!

I think ParrotPop will shed a few pounds sweating !!

My Dr said none of the shots is a bad as getting the disease itself (I was griping about my horrible reaction to the typhoid shots). Yellow fever vaccine is cultured in eggs (maybe something else now ?) so it's no big deal unless you have allergies to egg products.

I saw on a brochure for Amazon fishing trips that anti malarial pills are also recommended, might check that out too especially if you'll be spending any nights ashore in the interior.

I would think tetanus and typhoid would be a good idea as well

Thanks Percy..with all those shots I should make sure we go to places where they are needed... why waste a good thing..lol.. Meanwhile I have an appt. for a physical with my primary and I'll ask him about meds. Going to call the Consulate today in Boston and the CDC in Worcester plus a few more places to confirm everything before we start in..Oh yes. I think we need new passport pictures.. that is the easiest..at Walgreens or CVS I think.. With the three storms predicted this week.. I would just as soon get out NOW

Because I travel alot to some places that have never been on your top 1000 places you ever wanted to go, I've had every shot there is out there. I have a needle phobia, but it sure is better than being in some third world country and you get sick.... The other thing I always have with me is Cipro. Because I travel extensively in Latin America, I've found being prepared is a TOTAL lifesaver...
