They tell me if you stay at the Raddison near JFK (for 119.00 per night), they'll shuttle you to the pier and you can leave your car there for free for seven days.

We just returned home from RC Nordic to Bermuda out of NYC. Per my husbands boss from New Jersey, we drove from vermont to Port imperial, and took the ferry over. We paid $61.00 for parking for the whole week. The ferry is right there where you park, and costs $5.00 pp each way. We did this not just for the $100.00 savings, but because we talked to others who parked at the port for $168.00, and had to sit in line for hours to park. The only down side to this is the Ship is about 6 blocks from the ferry, so we walked up the street to board the ship. Its an easy level walk, took about 10-15 min. We each had one roll on suitcase so it was not difficult for us. It worked out great and we were able to scoot right off the ship and head out immediately. I would recommend this for anyone who is in reasonable health. We are already planning to sail out of NY again next year and will park there again. Your timing of seeing new england will be good for foliage season. Wishing you a great trip!! Sue

If you want to see foliage- the ship ports aren't the areas and you will be past peak when you go in the upper regions. Rent a car and drive interior for the best sightings. As for pier parking it just went up to $24/ day paid in advance in cash, but right at the dock.

Port Imperial is a good place to park if you're coming from the NJ side of the river. If coming in from elsewhere, there is secure indoor parking in a few garages out on the end of 43rd or 44th Street - about $15 per 24 hours with all taxes included. It's about a $4 cab ride to the pier from there or perhaps 15 minute walk.
