Progresso to Chichen Itza

Has anyone been to Chichen Itza on a cruise ship excersion from Progresso lately? Is it somewhat safe.
How many buses go on the tour.

Thanks

Been to Chichen Itza but not on a cruise excursion. Typically, it will be busy during peak season, with or without the crusie ships. The numbers from the cruise ships are very small in terms of the total vistors.

It is realtively safe compare to a lot of places. If you are worry about the Mexican drug killing and violence, you won't see it there.

Thanks for the response.
Yes, we are concerned about the drug violence.
If a thousand plus people arrive in Progresso on a cruise ship, I would imagine that at least a few hundred would be going on the excursion to Chichen Itza.
I would hate to find that the Chichen Itza day trip is cancelled for lack of interest or safety.

Cancellin due to lack of interest is unlikely .... although you won't see a few hundred from a crusie ship. You should see at elast 2 to 3 buses. You only need 44 to fill a bus. Which cruise line and what ship?

We are thinking about Carnival Cruise Lines aboard the ECSTASY.
During January.
What do you think?

Chichen Itza is about one of the few excursions I would STRONGLY suggest you go with the cruise tour (...and this from somebody who hardly EVER take the cruise tours). It is a 4 hr ride; the only drawback is that there is not enough time at the site. Do not get distracted by the entrance vendors; free time use it to explore. This is the Place of a Lifetime.

And here lies the problem with cruise shore excursions to palces like this: the travelling time is much longer than the time spent on the ctual site. The same goes for Tulum, Coba etc. A place like this should be visited on its own and not via a quick stop with a cruise excursion to give it justice.

I am a big fan of cruising and takes crusie vcations all the time, but that is one place that I would recommend to do it as a land tour. But hey, a sampling is better than nothing. If you have an interesting tour guide on the bus, it will make the time go faster.
