One day in the Bahamas

I'm going on a cruise in Mid-August and have one day in the Bahamas (Nassau). What are the highlights? What was the favorite things you did/saw there? Thanks!

Must be a 3 days cruise if that is your only destination. The Atlantis hotel is popular because of its casino and water tunnel and outside beach/sports. Other than that maybe a carriage ride around downtown, shopping at the crappy straw market or a visit to Cable beach.

chubby_faye,

One option would to have lunch at the Ocean Club and then go to Atlantis. Yyou can also go to the straw market and go back on the ship and enjoy the sun.

Have a great cruise.

I would stongly recommend the blue Lagoon dolphin encounter. (May not be offered through the cruise line, but you can book directly). It's a bit pricey (about $130 for the most contact, I think) but it's an experience you won't forget.

Hanging out at Atlantis is OK; and Mr. Smith has it right: the Straw Market is pretty crappy...

Let me add my opinion on the Straw Market. It's very close to the pier and the guidebooks said "everyone" goes there, so we went in too. The vendors assert a lot of pressure to buy! One vendor put jewelry on me with difficult clasps to undo so I couldn't get it off and would have to buy it. I finally did get it off and said no thanks. They also don't want you to buy one of anything. It's always "3 for $20.00" or something like that. Did not enjoy it there at all.

Ok - Is there anything to look forward to? There doesn't seem to be a lot of highlights for Fodors readers....

CF:

Didn't mean to be a downer. There are some nice beaches--I can remember one near Atlantis (at Atlantis?) that was very pretty.

If you're into booze cruising, the Yellow Bird was a lot of fun. I vaguely remember a contest based on how many cups of punch people could carry up two flights of stairs to the top deck while he boat rocked (record was 9).

There are some nice restaurants, and we did hear some good music upstairs at a little cigar bar one night.

The snorkeling's not very impressive if you've been to Hawaii or Aruba, but it's relaxing. Taking a catamaran snorkel cruise is fun if all you do is to hang out in the hammocks and relax.

I imagine there are plenty of fishing charters too.

The downtown area (straw market aside) does have lots of duty-free shopping if you like that sort of thing.

There are also a couple of casinos--one at Atlantis, the other down by--I think--cable beach.

I spent 4 nights in Nassau a few years ago and had a nice time; I'm sure you'll find plenty to occupy yourself for a day.

Cheers!
