New England excursions

We will be cruising Sept 12 on Princess with stops in Newport, Boston, Bar Harbor, Saint John and Halifax. Any advice on the best excursions in these ports and/or which ports are best done on your own?

We are in our late 30's and in good physical shape. We want to see the things that are a must, but don't want to waste all day on tours that would be better on our own. Thanks!

In Boston, utilize the Trolley. It makes many stops throughout the day you can hope on and off. Since you are in good physical shape I would suggest researching these 2 suggestions and do your own thing: Newport key-in 40-steps and Cliff Walk. I wasn't disappointed. For Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and for Halifax - Peggy's Cove. There's lost of info via internet. Happy Sailing.

bbradley, we are going on the same cruise on Sept. 12 with Princess. I like to check out the shore excursions booklet that Princess sent and see what excursions they have to offer. You can get a very good detail of each of the stops recommended. Then book with Princess if you like or go on your own. We were disappointed with shore excursions on our last cruise so we decided to go on our own this time. It is a lot cheaper too. Check out cruise critics website for more information on ports http://www.cruisecritic.com/ports/area.cfm?area=7 or even Fodors should have lots of information. I'm new to Fodors so I haven't perused the website enough to know. Hey, looks like the tropical weather might follow us there. Hope not!

JoyinBR,

We are going on the New England cruise on Sept 12th also. I am trying to decide which tours, also. I, like you, have been disappointed on past cruises with the tours and would like to branch out on our own. We have already signed up for the whale watching tour, though, because we were told it could sell out quickly. I will be researching this week and will make reservations before we leave. If you hear of any good tours to take independently, please share. Look forward to meeting you on the cruise! We are from Louisiana. Where are you from?
