New England/Canada cruise

When is the best time to see the fall leaves on a New England/Canada cruise? Is mid Sept. usually too early? I know it varies from year to year, but just wondering when is usually the best time to see the colors.
Thanks for any information!

On a cruise last year Sept 8-15. Only saw foliage just beginning to turn in Acadia Park in Maine. I think it would be Oct. before you see very much. You will not see alot in the ports, but would have to get inland to see alot of foliage. We were in St. John, Halifax, Boston, Newport, and Bar Harbor.

Prime time for seeing the leaves in color varies slightly from year to year, but around Columbus Day is a good benchmark. I agree the best leaf viewing is not along the coast, although Acadia can get reasonably nice. We found the best stops for this were Quebec and Sydney, but nothing compares to the White Mountains of New Hampshire or the mountainous area of Vermont.
