Michael, I'm envious. I've sailed on the Norway three times, and I love every idiosyncratic inch of her. I do hope they don't scrap her and she returns to the sea completely restored. Please let us know how your trip went. I'm sure Norwegian is only making necessary repairs at this point, but I still can't imagine them allowing her to sail in bad shape.

Makes sense to me. I'm gonna get rid of something but before I do let me sink a lot of money in to something with no roi.

Michael Jul 18th, 2001 08:59 AM

To the last poster:

Hey, that was mean-spirited! I was hoping for constuctive comments; not ones from people trying to make me feel bad about money already spent on a vacation of a lifetime! Shame on you!

Mike
NYC

Whoa.............dis!

yeh sure! Jul 19th, 2001 11:17 AM

Whoa dis or dat. What is that? Hey I'm a realist and Michael being from NYC I figured you'd be a little thicker skinned. I hope you have a beautiful time. I was just saying that don't expect too much and then anything extra will be a bonus.

Michael Jul 20th, 2001 06:16 AM

Well, I guess you're right....I should be a bit more thick-skinned! Esp being from NYC (that was very funny!). I will take your advice and hope for the best!

Mike
NYC

yeh sure! Jul 23rd, 2001 08:52 AM

Michael in reviewing my comments, you're right. They were mean. Sorry about that. I hope you have a fantabulous time.

I can't imagine that the last trip of this famous ship would be run as "a bucket of bolts", esp after the really bad PR NCL got in May with the Norway being held in port by the Coast Gaurd.

Hi, I'm from Tempe, Az and we were on the ship in July and had a blast. Our cabin seened a bit "tired". Food and service were nice. Tender service was sssslllllooowww, but all in all, a fun time at sea.

We think the Norway is a lovely ship, and are sorry to see her go!

Sherry Becker Aug 5th, 2001 08:10 PM

I've read all the posts about the Norway and I'm still a little concerned. Going on the tranatlantic in just a few weeks. Wondering if it's even safe to go across the "pond" on this ship. If they patched the sprinkler system in a "slap shot" way...who knows what else.....I want to be EXCITED about this trip...

Paul Therault Aug 5th, 2001 09:38 PM
Hi Sherry,

The ship was launched in 1961 so do not expect the elegance it once was when it sailed as the SS France.

It was built like a battleship (same as the QE2 and the Queen Mary.

It is not going to sink and since the sprinkler system was upgraded to US Coast Guard policy I would not worry about fire.

If you have an uncomfortable cabin simply ask the pruser to change it. I doubt the ship will be full.

You should have an average cruise and do not expect the Four Seasons or Hyatt.

Tidbit: If you look really close at the forward hull you will faintly see the name SS France painted over.

The ship is historical.

Paul

I is my understanding that the final transatlanic crossing was sold out in May.

We booked this last November and frequent visits to the NCL web site saw the available cabins disappearing at an unbelievable pace.

This is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for anyone who wants to experience a transatlantic crossing the way it was 40 years ago or for those, like us, who have sailed this classic in the past and just want to say "goodbye."

So I wouldn't count on being able to change cabins on this sailing.

Renegade4
(Kingston, MA)

Thanks, Paul, for the advice....I feel better already!

We booked many months ago...February I believe...and were told by NCL that only inside cabins were available. Finally found a jr. suite on the SKY deck through an online travel agency...Anyone know anything about this location? I believe a cabin on one of the lower decks may have been more centrally located.

Thanks for the tidbit about the SS France painted on the hull...I'll surely look for that....Sherry

The word on the street is that it has been sold out for a while............

xxxxx Aug 15th, 2001 12:21 PM

Sold out? There's a sucker born every minute.

Michael Aug 16th, 2001 10:06 AM

What a nice thing to say to folks who've already booked & paid for this trip...........

I really do not like the Norway. We did a transatlantic on her two years ago, and the ship was in poor condition. We had a very large suite, worn, but very comfortable. The staff didn't go out of their way at all, and the food was so-so. I kind of felt like it was left-overs. Right in the middle of the ocean, a freighter passed across our bow in broad daylight. It was too close for comfort in that big ocean.
Only two short weeks and Michael will be on his dream cruise.

We will be waiting anxiously for his return and his un-biased opinion of this final U.S. voyage.

Paul
