Machu Picchu tours

We're considering a cruise that ends in Lima.
The ship's tour to Machu Picchu is too short/crowded/pricey so we'd like to find a local outfit that runs small group tours.
Can anyone recommend one?
Thanks.

You may have better luck posting this in the South American forum.

Before anyone can make any suggestions, how much time you plan to spent on Machu Picchu? It will take a fair bit of travel time to get you to the town site, and that's before you took the bus to get up there.

Hi Eschew-
Yes, I also posted this on S.A.
I think we'd want to spend about 5-6 nights.

Staying at the town site is a whole lot cheaper than at the hotel where the ruins are lcoated. We stayed at the Sumaq Hotel and absolutely loved it. We had a room with a balcony facing the Urubamba River. Service and staff were great and spoke good English. Sumaq Hotel is probably one of the better hotels there.

We didn't really pre-book a guide. Local guides are readily available. We took the train to Machu Picchu town site, and from the town site, you took the bus up to the ruins. Everyone took the bus. Make sure you pay for a round trip ticket, it's cheaper. You can probably book everything yourself on line relatively easy, and would be a whole cheaper than book through a tour company.

You can probably try Globus as they offer South American tours. They are not cheap but is very good. We used them for part of our trip through Peru.
