Thx again Frank & kfusto! You guys are very helpful(& others here too who have helped me so far!). This will be our first cruise so I am really at a loss as to which ship, which type of cabin, etc. The only thing I know is that we want a Europens cruise.Probably 12 days. Has to have Santorini. We are fairly limited in terms of the time frame. It will have to be May 25-June 5 ( or some time after May 15 & we have to back on Canadian soil for June 6.)
I see that Celebrity has one May 25-June 5 Venice to Barcelona. I will take a look @ Cruisecritic & Roll Call & see what I can find. Do you guys book "air transportation" in your cruise package or do you arrange that on your own? We cld fly out of Toronto or Buffalo so that is something else that I am trying to decide. Any thoughts?

We never book the air, nor the insurance --- but again it is part of our approach to min expense. We almost always go two or three days ahead of the departure so that we adjust to jet lag on our time and not the ship's time. After the cruise we will generally spend another week or two on land before returning. Often try to use open jaw tickets. This year, for example, we flying into Rome and coming home from Zurich. It is actually two hundred dollars cheaper than RT thru Rome.

If you have a tight return schedule there is some advantage to the cruise line air package. They will take good care of you, give you priority for departing the ship, and make sure you make your return plane. To bad you cannot do the May30th trip with us.

Frank: I too wish that we cld go on May 30 . It wld be fun to meet you! Another question: because of our tight return schedule, wld we be able to reserve our own flights to Venice arriving a few days b/f May 25 but book the ruturn w/ the cruise company to make sure that we are back in Canada by June 6 (cruise ends up in barcelona on June 5th)?

Probably not. But ask. Ships always dock early and they hustle to get you off. If you book a return flights for afternoon, you should not have a problem. You will be off the boat by 8AM or so.

If you book air through the cruise, they make all the decisions about schedules. To change that, you pay a premium with "custom air" that is normally 100pp.

I prefer to do air on my own and would not cut it so close as you are considering if it is essential you arrive back by that date. Things can and do happen. I have had significant delays due to weather, immigration problems, security, etc. There are no guarantees.

I would recommend if you book Century considering a Family Ocean View or better. Her standard cabins are really tight for three people. We had a Concierge Class cabin and it was only 171 sq ft and the two of us felt cramped. For twelve days, I would hate to be so confined.

So, don't do the cruise that ends on June 5th in Barcelona if it is critical for me to be back home in Canada by June 6?

I would not, if it was a drop dead date. Things do happen. I once delayed a full day by weather, and have often been delayed several hours when there are lots of different nationalities on board.

The first folks off are the ones who are in suites or those with frequent guest perks. Everyone else is assigned a color and taken off with that color group. Some ships have self carry programs but not all.

I am just more comfortable when I have room for the unexpected. If it was a drop dead for me, I would not risk it. If it was not a big deal, I would.

I know most of the flights I need to get home from Europe leave in the morning. Cruise lines will tell you not to book flights before 1pm as a rule so you cannot expect much help if you push the envelope.

My husband, myself, and our soon to be 16 year old are sailing in June on Celebrity on a 10 day Med. Cruise...our son has sailed with us 6 other times; he absolutely loves it...(he does hve some sp.needs) but he finds the teen areas and busies himself beautifully...there are always so many teens that there are teen discos at night; a teen pool area and other attractions...we tend to eat breakfast together, and always dinner but sometimes he will get lunch on his own...and we sail Celebrity when we can...did Princess last summer and he had a ball; NCL Hawaii before that and again loved it...
