Livorno - Should we pick the Florence/Pisa or SAn Gimignano Shore Excursion ??

I have one more port excursion to book - this one has me stumped ! Should we do the Florence/Pisa on your own or just go to San Gimignano ? We have 2 teenagers going and they want to see the Tower of Pisa - is it worth it ? OR Could we do Florence/Pisa and San Gimignano on our own or hire a driver ? I'm a little leary about hiring a driver in Europe - is it safe ?

We wondered this too, i.e. excursions on our own vs. the ships offerings. Our TA advised us to do a bit of research and do it on our own. We tried that and found it to be MUCH better. Why?
We saved a ton of money and we were on our OWN time. We did the Pisa/Florence excursion with a private cab. There will be many of them on the docks just waiting for business. They are professional, liscensed drivers and I think you will be just fine. esp. with two teens. You go at your own pace, see what you want and return when you feel like it. The ships excursions for Flo./Pisa would have cost us $450.00. ($150.00 pp X3). We did the same on our own for $300.00 though at the time the dollar was on a par w/ the Euro. Hope this helps and I think you will be fine. Cheers, Larry

You're welcome! Enjoy your cruise and try plenty of gelato.

I took a Med cruise and did all excursions on my own. You can get train schedules online to plan ahead, and buy tickets at the station. I did Rome on my own for about $8 US, as opposed to the $100+ RCL wanted for just a bus ride. I also did Florence/Pisa on my own riding the train. The tower was neat, but you can walk from the station, see it, take a photo, and walk back to the train to continue on to Florence. A cab may save you time, but it can be done on the trains. Most likely, you won't be the only one headed to the station either. Cabs are always at port waiting for a fare. Learn some useful phrases and you might even enjoy the adventure of the train more.

I am a local driver, driving lots of small private groups to the destinations you mentioned. Remember that if you choose the Siena and San Gimignano option you will have less time available for each stop because the driving time is longer than that of doing Florence and Pisa. But I must say it will be a pleasant driving along the tuscan hills. The FI-PI-LI "superstrada" to Florence instead it is not that spectacular.
