ALASKA - PRE-BOOKING EXCURSIONS
We are looking forward to our 7-day cruise in September and we would really like to take the railroad tour when we are in Skagway. Should we pre-book with the railroad company or is it advisable to just book on the cruise? We're a bit worried that it might be sold out if we wait until we get on the ship. Thank you.

If you really want to do it, then pre-book. When we did it, the train left from the dock beside the ship, so super easy.
On the day we were in Skagway there were three liners docked so things were pretty busy.

We pre-booked also, and months in advance, with Chilkoot Charters. The tour they offered was more comprehensive than what Princess offered. We did the rail/bus/dog sled tour. Loved it!

The rail ride is good, but expensive. We did it the first time we cruised to Skagway. May I also add that there are also some very good add on or alternative shore excursions for much less money. Check out the Dyea Dave tour. we very much enjoyed our almost day long tour up into the Yukon and Carcross, along with numerous stops for photos, wildlife sightings, and points of interest. we felt we had gotten a bargain for our trip with DD tours! They will even work with you to help combine a rail/DD tour experience.

The Whitepass railway sold out? Not likely to happen. Do you want to just go half way, to the summit,or want to tame in other sites?
The Whitepass train Station is about 15 to 20 minutes walk from the dock. This is one of those excursions that it could be more advantagous to book wit heither a tour/adventure company or through the ship than book with the railway direct.
If you book through the ship, some excursion will let you board the train right at the dock, teh ship dock enxt to it. Or they will bus you to have a tour and board you at the station.
Jewell Garden is the hidden gem of Skgaway. Make a lunch stop there if you can. It is also relatively close to the Reids Fall and the cemetary which is worth a visit if you near by.

My guess is that you can book your excursions on the ship's website before your trip.
I've done that on other cruises.
