Is it safe to take the train from Pireaus to Athens?

I will be on a cruise that docks in Athens for a day. I would like to explore Athens independently. Is it safe to take the train to Athens? Is the train reliable? Which stop should I get off at in Central Athens to explore the city?
I am interested in the Acropolis, Patliament and the Plaka.

Thanks in advance.

Athens is SAFE and I love the city. We just took a bus from the port. I think it's #40 and another time we took a cab. You want to go to Syntagma Square and you can walk through the Plaka and up to the Acropolis.

Is it safe??? Of course it is. It is brand new. It is a subway although not below ground until the city center. Any of the downtown stops will do. Just decide where you want to go first.

It is a fairly short walk over to the train station from the port. At the station you can buy your tickets. The train is new, clean and fast. You can get off downtown right by where the changing of the guard takes place then take the train over to the station by the Acropolis. It is easy to use. Common sense rules to follow are to be aware of your surrounding, your fellow riders, and do not carry things in places that might be pick-pocketed. Have fun.

Just make sure that there are no Spartans waiting from 404 BCE to ambush the train.
