internet onboard (ruby) princess?
 

anyone know how much it costs to access internet / wi-fi on (ruby) princess?
is it possible to pick up "free" shore-based wi-fi when in port?

You can get packages for $75, $100 etc which works out to about 75 cents a minute or there about. Be fore warned that the system maybe slow when there are many users at peak time as there is a limited bandwidth. If you just want to check email and what have you, 100 minutes for 7 days is actaully lots. I used my own laptop and VPN back to my company's server to check email and do some of work. I usually do it around 11 pm or so when there are not many people on the internet. The speed is actually quite good. During peak time when the room is full, took forever just to load up a page.

There is no "free" shore-based w-fi unless you are talking about your 3G data pacakages. Cell phone works on the ship and you will pay international roaming charges if you uses it.

Sometimes you can pick up an unsecured WiFi signal when your ship is docked. We weren't looking to pirate it, but found one in La Romana last month by accident. I was using the laptop to download photos and it happened to pop up in my taskbar. Although it was weak, I was able to long on and get my email.

A better plan is to use the ship's WiFi (slow & expensive), wait until you are in port and find an Internet Cafe with WiFi (fast & cheap) or, in some ports, a Dunkin' Donuts (free). Seriously! Who would have ever thought we'd find Dunkin' Donuts in the Caribbean? ;)

As of fall 2010 here is the cost for the 4 plans they offer.
1: Pay-As-You-Go, $0.75 per minute
2: $0.55 per minute, 100 minutes for $55.00
3: $0.50 per minute, 150 minutes for $75
4: $0.40 per minute, 250 minutes for $100

My experience with it has been its not worth the money better to do what you have to on shore. It is very slow and will drive you crazy if your use to a higher speed. If its just for casual use now and then its ok. I take my mini laptop hit the first wireless place on shore get my business done in 15-20 minutes and I am done with it.
