If You Had to Choose......Alaska or Panama Canal Cruise?

I realize they are very different, but which would you choose and why?

We are thinking about either a 10-11 day vacation to Vancouver and/or Seattle that would include a 7 day Alaskan cruise.....Or a 10-11 day Panama Canal (partial) cruise. The Panama Canal cruise should be much less expensive since we live in South Florida, but maybe it would be too much like lots of other Caribbean cruises we've already done. Your opinions please!

Both are great trips.

If I had never been either place (yet know what I know now!), I'd choose based on the time of year.

It would definitely be Alaska in July or August ... likewise, the Panama Canal in January or February.

Early summer or early fall can be cold/rainy/ quite unpredictable in Alaska. The same period can be muggy/drippy/hot in Central America.

Definitely Alaska. Snow-covered mountains over 15,000 ft rising out of the sea. Shorelines with no roads, no telephone poles, no condos...just gorgeous wild country. Watch the sunset at 11:30PM. Crystal clear air that gives you views of mountains 200+ miles away. Wildlife you'll never see in Latin America. We get more than enough heat here in Texas. We'll probably never go back to the Caribbean. But we'd go back to Alaska in a heartbeat.

Another vote for Alaska! Magnificent views! And I would leave out of Vancouver with a day there to enjoy the sights.

Put me down for Alaska!
I have been through the canal twice. During the summer months it it VERY hot and humid. It is interesting the first few hours, but takes about 8hrs. to do the transit ocean to ocean. Also with the instabilty in the world today, I don't plan to do it anytime soon.
An cruise/your of Alaska is very scenic! Wonderful state to visit. Would like to do it again soon.
Ditto on the Vancouver siteseeing. Stay at least a couple days. Lots to see.

Okay..I live in the Northeast... and tie me down if I ever decide to go to Alaska...unless I make the decision on the hottest day of the year. We did two patial transits of the Canal and a third...I vote for the Panama Canal...of course depending on the ports and if the San Blas Islands are included..that is a must. I've had enough snow and cold to last me for the rest of my life this winter.. So, living in S. Florida it would be a novelty...Good Luck..

We've done both - hands down, Alaska!
We sailed out of Seattle last August and of all our vacations and cruises, nothing can compare.

Well, I guess Alaska it is! I have to admit I was hoping the votes would go the other way since I don't like cold weather (from NE Ohio originally). Hubby has been talking about a trip to Seattle/Vancouver for years so I thought we should combine that trip with an Alaska cruise, since it's so far from FLL. Now, do we leave from Seattle or Vancouver.....or doesn't it really matter?

If you can pull it off - I would try to go one way from Vancouver to Seward (or vice versa). Maybe try to spend some days pre and post cruise in Vancouver and Anchorage area.

I thought the Panama Canal was far more fascinating and offered the opportunity to visit a few countries instead of one. Costa Rica was tropical and warm but didn't remind me of, say, Barbados. I am surprised at how many chose Alaska - perhaps it depends where you're from. For me, I would take the Panama Canal any day.

For an Alaska cruise I too would prefer to leave from Vancouver.

***** Interesting thread! ******

However, all the Alaska votes seem to imply a trip in May, June, July or August.

What if your vacation time is already "locked in" for time off in spring or fall?

Panama Canal would be my choice, especially if you can stop at San Blas. To me Alaska was boring. The towns consisted of a block of shops filled with small totem poles and mocassins. Do the Panama Canal and read the book Path Between the Seas to appreciate the making of the canal.

We have done both and had a wonderful time.
BUT Alaska is the most beautiful place I have EVER been....and I HATE COLD WEATHER..ha ha. Just take warm clothes.
We were there in May '01 and are returning this May for our 30th wedding anniversary.
GET A BALCONY....you won't be sorry!!!
We had our own space at the rail. PLUS we could go out there in our robes !!
PS Princess is doing aa 11 night cruise roundtrip out of San Francisco.
