How to plan 1 day in Copenhagen

I'll be on a cruise ship & will visit Copenhagen, Denmark on Wednesday 17th August from 11am to 6pm. I'm interested in seeing Nyhavn & Tivoli Gardens, & also a canal tour if there is time. I'd appreciate members ideas on how best to plan the day. Many thanks John

I would rank them Nyhaven, canal boat tour and Tivoli. Tivoli is an old fashioned style amusement park with high prices.

At night Tivoli Gardens was rather magical with tiny lights, but otherwise was not the "gardens" I thought it might be. Depending on where you are from, you may not appreciate this amusement park compared to those in the U.S., for example, that are much better. Given the choice and limited time again, I would skip it.

Nyhaven and a canal boat tour, on the other hand would be worth it. Nyhaven perhaps for a meal and the boat tour to see the city from the water.

We also enjoyed the Viking Museum.

I have been told the best view of Copenhagen Wis from the outside staircase at the Church of our Saviour. We made it to the church but the staircase were closed due to high wind. It is a beautiful city and we would probably like to go back (eventually) and visit again.

I really ENJOYED THE CANAL TOURS. I took 2 different ones.
Nyhaven was certainly charming and important to see for first Copenhagen trip.

I did enjoy the Castle in the Park (Rosenberg Slot)

Strolling the streets was great fun.
Ida Davidson for "open smoreboard" sandwich.

I was not a big fan of Tivoli Gardens......but I am not an amusement park type of person.

I'll be there next Tuesday and although I will be there a few days before my cruise, will give you what I think you might like since I know about packing what you can on one day cruise stops.

You would get better responses if you post it in the Europe forum.

Back from my trip.

Port to city center: can get #26 bus to Nordhaven station and take the train to the city center. Should be 2 zones from Nordhaven or a cab will probably be $40US each way.

National Museum is free and fabulous with lots of wonderful Danish items.

Stroget is the main pedestrian strolling street and you will pass the Round Tower to go up and see the roof tops of the city.

One end of Stroget is the Town Hall/Train Station area, the other end is Nyhaven. Canal tour is a must do.

A few blocks north of Nyhaven will be Amalienborg Palace is you want to get a little bit of Danish palace history.

There is also Rosenborg Slot (palace) for the royal jewwels. Not on the scale of the British gems but very nice.

AVOID Tivoli like the plague. Thousands of people, lots of rides, screaming riders, smokers and unless you really need to go there, it is just an amusement park.

That will be a packed stop.

We were in Copenhagen on a rainy day last month. My advice is to have a rainy day back up plan. I heard good things about Rosenborg Palace.

Triple..or more ?? votes for missing Tivoli..

Canal trip is great. Even better yet is rent one of the' go boats' and do it yourself. of course no commentary though.

Nyhaven very touristy ..packed with cruisers. good for walk through and lunch..although we couldn't even stomach that, too many people. Some nice places on the side streets.

The National Museum is like a palace ,it has a few different areas you visit good for 1.5 hours.
