How to book your own excusions?
 

3 couples Cruising on Carnival Valor in May. Stopping Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Interested in Snokeling, Americas' Cup sailing, beaching and possibly horseback riding on beach.

Any suggestions on how to book independent excusions or even just find out what is available? Can these be booked in advance or only on day of arrival?

Some internet research may help you find places to book these excursions online. Also, in most ports, when you exit the ship there are vendors nearby where you can book things. Remember that the ship doesn't wait if an excursion is delayed in returning unless it was booked through the cruiseline.

Go over to cruisecritic.com and go to their message boards for "ports" where you will find many posts for excursions. And remember, these excursion companies depend on the cruise industry for their living and they are all very much aware of the sailing times. Don't be scared off from arranging your own tours because of the threat of leaving without you.

Ditto Peter's recommendation. I've found some great tour operators through recommendations on CruiseMates.com. Excellent experience at less than it would have cost through the ship.

For snorkeling and sailing, I highly recommend Captain Max out of St Thomas. We have gone with her twice, and plan to go again in Jan 06. You can charter her boat and have a wonderful day. Google for captain+max+st+thomas. Be glad to answer any questions about her outfit for you. Regarding St Maartin, catch a cab to Orient Beach and enjoy a gorgeous beach day. You can even go 'buck nekkid' if you go around the point at OB!. The Butterfly Farm is close by if you are so inclined.

Thanks for the suggestions. Used them and found some great excursions. For your future reference try "High Pockets" for a private chartered sailing yacht. Can't wait!
